Chapter 14: Evening at the Piano

The evening sunlight filtered through the tall, arched windows of the ballroom, casting long amber beams across the polished surface of the grand piano. Outside, the autumn wind rustled the dry leaves along the estate driveway, but inside, the air was warm and still, untroubled by the storms of the past weeks. I sat on the padded bench, my fingers resting lightly over the ivory keys, feeling the cool, smooth surface beneath my fingertips. Lily stood right beside me, leaning against my shoulder with a small, contented sigh, clutching her favorite picture book in one hand.

Martha walked into the room carrying a small crystal vase filled with fresh white roses, placing it carefully on the mahogany side table near the window. She paused for a moment, her eyes sweeping over the open space with a quiet, appreciative nod before she spoke. "The estate attorneys called from downtown just a few minutes ago, Dante," Martha said softly, her voice carrying a calm reassurance that had been missing for so long. "The final transfer papers for the trust have been filed and stamped. Everything is completely secured."

I looked up from the keyboard, offering her a tired but genuine smile. "Thank you, Martha. For everything you’ve done, through all of it. I don’t think we would have made it through the audits without your help."

Martha shook her head, adjusting the cuff of her crisp white blouse. "I only did what needed to be done, Dante. Elena was a good woman, and her music deserved to be protected. Keeping secrets for people who only cared about power never sat right with my conscience." She smiled gently down at Lily, who was busy tracing the carved wooden grain on the side of the piano with her small finger. "I’ll start dinner in a little while. Take all the time you need here."

As Martha walked quietly out of the ballroom, the heavy oak doors closing behind her with a soft click, the silence of the room settled around us like a warm blanket. It was the same silence that Elena used to cherish after a long day of writing, when the notes finally came together on the page without a struggle. I turned my attention back to the keyboard and gently pressed a single chord. The rich, resonant sound filled the high-ceilinged room, vibrating softly against the crystal chandelier overhead.

Lily looked up at me with her big blue eyes, her expression bright and curious. "Daddy, is that the song Mommy wrote when the sun was coming up?" she asked, her voice soft and sweet.

"Yes, sweetheart," I answered, wrapping my arm gently around her small waist to keep her steady on the bench. "It’s the very first song she played in this room before we moved in. She wanted the whole house to hear it."

"Can we play it together now?" she asked, holding up her hands with her fingers curved like little paws, just the way Elena used to show her when she was learning the basics.

"We can play it together," I said, sliding slightly to the side to give her more room on the bench. My right hand guided her small index finger toward middle C, and together we pressed down on the keys. The simple, familiar melody drifted out into the empty room, rising and falling in gentle waves. There was no cameras, no board meetings, and no legal threats hanging over our heads. There was only the music, the fading autumn light, and the quiet promise of a tomorrow built on truth.
