Chapter 12: The Collapse of the Empire

Victoria stopped at the opposite end of the table, placing both hands flat on the glass as if attempting to anchor herself to a world that was rapidly slipping away. Her gaze locked onto mine with a fierce, desperate intensity, completely devoid of the polite warmth she had projected at the gala weeks ago. The facade of high-society glamour had worn completely thin, revealing the cold, calculating survival instinct beneath.

"Protecting the brand, Victoria?" I asked quietly, standing up to meet her eye level across the mahogany. "You didn't protect anything. You stole a dead woman's voice, locked her child out of her own inheritance, and built an empire on a foundation of lies. The market isn't going to collapse because the truth comes out. It’s going to cleanse itself."

Mr. Sterling finally found his voice, though it shook slightly as he addressed her. "Victoria, the forensic audit... the wire transfers to Switzerland. We’ve seen the documentation. The board cannot defend these transactions. We have no choice but to vote on an immediate suspension of your executive duties, pending a full federal investigation."

For a fraction of a second, the iron-clad composure in Victoria's face faltered. A micro-expression of absolute disbelief flashed across her features—the realization that her loyal allies, the men and women she had manipulated and dined with for years, were abandoning her the moment her protection became a liability. She looked around the table, meeting one averted gaze after another, finding only cold silence where blind obedience used to reside.

"You cowards," she whispered, the venom in her voice sharper than any shout. "I made every single one of you rich. Without me, this company is nothing more than a glorified regional publisher."

"The vote is called," Sterling said, refusing to look at her as he raised his hand. One by one, the other directors raised theirs, a silent, damning consensus that echoed louder than any argument. Victoria stood frozen in the center of the room, her hands slowly curling into tight fists at her sides. The empire she had spent a decade constructing had vanished into thin air, undone not by a grand conspiracy, but by the quiet, unrelenting accumulation of truth.

Without another word, Victoria turned on her heel, her movements sharp and jerky, and walked out of the boardroom, the heavy doors clicking shut behind her with a finality that signaled the end of an era. I let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last remnants of the heavy tension drain from my shoulders. It was over. The legal architecture of her control was dismantled, and the path to restoring Elena's legacy was finally clear.
