Chapter 13: Unmasking the Board

Arthur Pendelton's voice droned on through the crystal-clear speakers, filling the grand ballroom with hollow platitudes about dedication, charity, and the sacred trust of pediatric healthcare. From our seats at the head table, Ethan didn't move a muscle. His gaze remained locked on the foundation president with a chilling, absolute intensity that made the surrounding guests unconsciously lean away from our chairs. The air around us felt thin, charged with the kind of static electricity that precedes a violent summer storm.

I reached inside my handbag, my fingers curling around the cold leather folio containing the audited financial statements, the falsified prescription records, and the bank routing slips linking Arthur Pendelton and Dr. Marcus Vance to a systematic embezzlement scheme disguised as medical research. The evidence was damning, airtight, and entirely unassailable.

"Now," Arthur announced, pasting on his brightest, most practiced smile as he wrapped up his speech, "before we open the floor to dinner and dancing, I'd like to invite our esteemed board members to join me on stage for a special recognition of our ongoing philanthropic milestones."

As polite applause rippled through the room, Ethan slowly stood up. He didn't wait for an invitation, nor did he head toward the stairs leading to the stage. Instead, he stepped out into the center aisle, his broad shoulders and commanding presence instantly drawing every eye away from the podium. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the ballroom so quickly that the lingering notes of the introductory music felt jarring and out of place.

"There's been a slight change of program, Arthur," Ethan's voice cut through the cavernous space, carrying effortlessly without a microphone. It was low, steady, and carried the terrifying weight of a final verdict.

Arthur froze mid-step on the dais, his smile twisting into a rigid, desperate grimace. "Ethan... my boy. We weren't expecting you to take the microphone tonight. Perhaps we can discuss foundation matters in private after—"

"No," Ethan interrupted, taking three slow, deliberate steps forward. "We'll discuss it right here, in front of the people who trusted you with their donations, and in front of the families whose children you nearly destroyed."

The murmurs began immediately, rippling through the sea of tuxedoed men and glittering women like wind through dry grass. Several board members seated near the front row started shifting uncomfortably in their seats, casting panicked glances toward the heavy double doors at the back of the hall where estate security stood holding firm.

Ethan turned his head slightly, locking eyes with me. I took a deep, steadying breath, stood up from the table, and walked out to join him in the center aisle. Every flashbulb in the room seemed to go off at once, capturing the moment the truth stepped out from the shadows.
