Chapter 9: The Shattered Glass

The heavy bass from the overhead speakers thrummed through the polished mahogany floorboards as Dominic maneuvered us away from the blinding glare of the main reception hall and toward the private VIP alcove overlooking the dark, sprawling river. Julian Vance had not broken eye contact with us since our arrival; even as he shook hands with a smiling state assemblyman and accepted another round of applause, his cold gaze remained pinned to Clara like a hawk tracking wounded prey across an open field. The murmurs of high society swirled around us like expensive perfume, completely oblivious to the high-stakes chess match unfolding in plain sight beneath the glittering chandeliers. Every waiter who passed us with a tray of champagne, every security guard stationed near the arched mahogany entryways, seemed suddenly hyper-aware of our presence, their posture stiffening as we crossed their line of sight.
"He's signaling his detail," Dominic muttered under his breath, his sharp eyes flicking toward a pair of broad-shouldered men in identical gray suits who had just detached themselves from the perimeter wall near the catering doors. They were moving in a practiced, convergent wedge through the dense crowd, cutting through clusters of laughing socialites and dignitaries with terrifying efficiency. "We don't have time to reach the broadcast control room through the main corridors anymore. He's trying to box us in before we can reach the technical wing. We have to take the service stairs behind the catering prep area."
Before we could pivot toward the hidden alcove and slip behind the velvet drapes, a sharp, glass-shattering sound echoed over the gentle string quartet's melody, instantly freezing the entire room in place. A crystal champagne flute slipped from a young waiter's tray near the center of the floor, shattering into a thousand glittering shards against the imported Italian marble. In that microsecond of absolute silence, before anyone could draw a breath, Julian Vance's amplified voice boomed from the stage microphone, cutting through the cavernous hall with surgical, public humiliation.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for your extraordinary generosity tonight," Julian announced, his voice smooth as polished obsidian, yet carrying an underlying, venomous edge that made my blood run cold. He stepped forward to the very edge of the elevated stage, his eyes scanning the crowd until they locked directly onto our small group near the perimeter. "It has come to my attention that tonight's historic celebration has... unexpected guests. Individuals attempting to peddle malicious falsehoods for personal gain at the direct expense of this foundation's proud, unblemished legacy."

The crowd murmured in collective confusion, heads snapping around like synchronized clockwork to find the source of his intense glare. Clara stiffened beside me, her knuckles turning bone-white as she gripped the hem of her dark coat for stability. The two security guards reached us instantly, their heavy hands lunging forward to grab Dominic’s arms with aggressive force. But Dominic didn’t flinch for a single second; with blinding, coiled speed, he pivoted on his heel, pinning the first guard’s wrist against a solid marble pillar with a sharp twist of leverage, while simultaneously sweeping the second guard's legs out from under him with a single, fluid motion. The men hit the floor hard, groaning in pain as the room erupted into panicked gasps, shrieks, and shouting matches.
"Stay back, Julian," Dominic said, his voice carrying an icy, terrifying authority that silenced the nearest tables faster than any security detail ever could. He stepped protectively in front of Clara and me, his open black blazer shifting to reveal the heavy, unyielding posture of a man ready for absolute war. Julian stared down from the stage, his polished corporate smile entirely vanished, replaced by a mask of raw, unfiltered fury.
