Chapter 4: Shadows in the Gallery

The grand central gallery of the Vance estate stretched out before us like a museum of stolen time. Towering oil portraits of Julian’s ancestors stared down from high vaulted ceilings, their painted eyes seeming to follow our every move across the polished marble floor. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead like frozen waterfalls, casting long, fractured shadows across the Persian rugs that lined the corridor.

I kept my hand firmly clamped around Lily’s small, warm palm as we navigated the cavernous hallway. Dominic walked slightly ahead, his black fedora tilted downward, his long black coat sweeping against his white trousers with every measured stride. He moved like a ghost through the halls of his enemy, entirely confident, his instincts honed by years of navigating high-stakes corporate warfare.

"Stay close to the wall," Dominic whispered back over his shoulder without breaking his stride. "The night security patrol loops through the west wing every twenty minutes. We have precisely four minutes before they clear this gallery."

I nodded, my breath hitching in my throat. Every shadow looked like a guard; every creak of the old wooden floorboards sounded like an alarm bell. Clara was resting safely back in Dominic's fortified study under the care of his trusted estate manager, but leaving her behind had wracked my nerves with raw anxiety. Yet, staying behind was a luxury we didn't possess. To secure our permanent freedom—and to ensure Julian Vance could never use his wealth to bury us again—we needed access to the main estate's secure terminal room, located directly behind the grand ballroom.

As we rounded a massive marble pillar, the sharp, distinct sound of approaching footsteps echoed off the high ceiling from the intersecting corridor ahead.

Dominic didn't hesitate. He grabbed my shoulder with his large, tattooed hand and pulled both Lily and me into the deep, velvet-draped alcove of a dormant display window. The heavy crimson fabric swallowed us in sudden darkness, smelling faintly of old dust and lavender. I pulled Lily tightly against my chest, pressing my hand over her mouth to stop any accidental whimpers. The little girl clutched her brown stuffed rabbit so hard her fingers dug into the plush fabric.

Through a small gap in the velvet drapes, I watched two of Julian’s private security guards march past. They wore crisp gray uniforms, holstered sidearms resting heavily against their hips, their faces carved with brutal, unthinking obedience. They were talking in low, muted tones.

"...boss is furious about the audit discrepancies in the foundation accounts," the taller guard muttered as they stopped just outside our hiding spot to light cigarettes. "If Vance finds out who leaked those files, heads are literally going to roll before sunrise."

"Relax," the second guard grunted, exhaling a thick cloud of gray smoke into the hallway. "Vance has the local district attorney in his back pocket. Nothing's going public. He's hosting the annual charity gala tomorrow night. Once the cameras are rolling and the press is flashing their lights, this whole mess will vanish under a mountain of PR spin."

"Let's hope so," the first guard muttered, stamping out his cigarette on the marble floor. "Move out. Check the servants' wing again. Vance wants absolute confirmation that the woman and the kid are still locked up."

The sound of their heavy boots faded down the hallway, the rhythmic clatter echoing into silence until nothing remained except the faint tick of a grandfather clock in the corner of the gallery.

I let out a long, shuddering breath, my knees nearly buckling beneath me. Dominic slowly pulled the velvet curtain back, peering out into the empty hallway before turning his steady, unflinching gaze toward me.

"You heard them," Dominic said softly, his voice cutting through the lingering tension in the alcove. "Vance is throwing a charity gala tomorrow night to cover his tracks. He thinks he can hide behind flashing cameras and adoring crowds."

I looked down at Lily, who was blinking up at me with wide, trusting eyes, then back at Dominic. The fear that had paralyzed me for days finally hardened into something sharp and unyielding.

"He thinks he's untouchable," I whispered, my voice carrying a quiet fury that surprised even myself. "Then we don't wait for him to come looking for us. We crash his gala."

Dominic’s lips twitched into a grim, approving smile. He extended his hand, his calloused fingers wrapping firmly around mine. "Now you're speaking my language. Let's go finish this."
