Chapter 8: The Warrant

The black-and-white cruisers of the county sheriff's department swept up the long, gravel-paved drive of the Vance estate just as the midday sun reached its zenith. The manicured boxwood hedges and towering eucalyptus trees looked absurdly pristine against the looming shadow of the impending scandal. I rode in the passenger seat of the lead cruiser, my hands resting quietly on my knees, watching the grand double doors of the manor grow closer.

When the cars came to a halt in the central courtyard, Deputy Chief Miller stepped out, flanked by three uniformed deputies and a county magistrate. I used my key to unlock the heavy mahogany front door, leading them into the cavernous foyer where a crystal chandelier cast glittering rainbows across the marble floor.

"Katherine!" I called out, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Katherine, come down to the foyer. The sheriff is here."

Within moments, the sound of heels clicking sharply against the polished oak of the upper landing signaled her approach. Katherine appeared at the top of the grand staircase, wearing an emerald silk dress that radiated cold elegance. Her blonde hair was swept back into a meticulous chignon, and her expression was a mask of haughty disdain. A faint, reddish-purple scratch still marked her left cheek—a lingering testament to the chaos of yesterday morning.

"Have you completely lost your mind, Julian?" she demanded, her voice ringing out with practiced theatrical outrage. She didn't look down at the deputies; her furious gaze locked entirely onto me. "Inviting the police into our home? Bringing this filth—" she glanced down and saw Maya standing near the open door with her legal advocate "—into my foyer? I want these trespassers off my property this instant."

Chief Miller stepped forward, flashing a warrant signed by a superior court judge. "Mrs. Katherine Vance. I am Detective Chief Miller with the county sheriff's department. You are being served with a search and seizure warrant for this residence, specifically the east wing and the master suite, pursuant to an ongoing criminal investigation into domestic assault, coercion, and unlawful restraint."

Katherine’s confident sneer faltered for a fraction of a second, her ice-blue eyes darting to the official document before snapping back to my face. A look of pure, unadulterated venom twisted her features. "You did this," she hissed, pointing a manicured finger directly at my chest. "You ungrateful, spineless coward. You think a little temper tantrum is going to ruin everything we’ve built? You think the board of directors is going to stand by a man who betrays his own wife?"

"The board of directors is already reviewing the financial audits and the security backups, Katherine," I replied, my voice disturbingly calm. "The shell companies you used to silence former staff have been flagged. The hidden cameras in the staff quarters have been cataloged. It’s over."

For a brief, terrifying moment, Katherine looked like a cornered animal, her chest heaving beneath the emerald silk as she realized the ironclad cage of her wealth and privilege was rapidly dissolving. But the panic vanished as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by a cold, calculated composure. She smoothed the front of her dress, lifted her chin with aristocratic defiance, and turned her back on us, walking slowly back toward the east wing.

"Execute the warrant," Chief Miller told the deputies, her eyes following Katherine’s retreating figure. "Let’s secure the master suite before anything else is scrubbed."
