Chapter 5: Night At The Estate

The amber security lights cast long, distorted shadows across the gravel driveway as I hoisted my duffel bag over my shoulder. The crisp autumn air bit at my face, carrying the scent of damp pine needles and the faint exhaust fumes of the idling sedan parked by the front gates. Mark stood a few paces behind me, his hands shoved deep into his trouser pockets, his shoulders carrying the weight of a shattered life. Lily walked beside me, her small hand clutching the fabric of my sleeve as if letting go would make the whole nightmare start all over again. We reached the car, and the driver immediately stepped out to take my bag, placing it gently into the trunk. I turned back to look at the towering brick facade of the estate, its grand second-story windows dark and brooding against the starless night sky. Only a few hours ago, that house had felt like a fortress guarding a dark and suffocating secret. Now, with Victoria temporarily restricted by a judge's emergency order and her high-priced legal team scrambling in the background, the place felt hollow. Mark looked at his daughter, then met my eyes across the roof of the car. There were no more polite pleasantries or employer-employee barriers between us; there was only the shared, aching knowledge of what we had survived and what still lay ahead. I got into the backseat, rolling down the window to say a final goodbye to Lily, promising her that we would speak every single day. As the sedan pulled away down the winding country lane, I watched Mark and Lily grow smaller in the rearview mirror, standing side by side under the amber glow of the gate light. It was the first time I had ever seen Mark look genuinely grounded, stripped of the blinding arrogance that wealth and status had afforded him for years. The city lights beckoned in the distance, promising anonymity and a chance to breathe, but I knew my part in this reckoning was far from finished. The digital video resting securely on Lily’s phone, and now backed up in multiple secure folders across the cloud, was just the opening salvo in a war for accountability that Victoria Vance never expected to fight.
