Chapter 11: Behind Closed Doors

The small conference room on the fourth floor of the courthouse smelled faintly of old paper and industrial carpet cleaner. Clara had secured the space for us to review the final deposition packets before the afternoon motions began. Sunlight filtered through the frosted glass windows, casting long, pale stripes across the wooden table where stacks of sworn statements sat neatly bound. Mark walked into the room a few moments later, closing the heavy oak door softly behind him. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes standing out sharply against his pale skin. He pulled out a chair opposite me, resting his forearms on the table, and stared down at his clasped hands for a long minute before speaking. He wanted to know about Lily, about how she was holding up in the temporary care facility across town where Clara had arranged for her to stay safely away from the media circus. I told him that Lily was remarkably resilient, spending her time sketching in a thick notebook and refusing to watch the local news broadcasts. Mark let out a slow, ragged breath, his shoulders sagging as the last remnants of his defensive armor crumbled away. He admitted that he had spent the past seven years convincing himself that Victoria's coldness was simply high-society eccentricity, a harmless price to pay for the glamorous life they shared in the public eye. I didn't interrupt or offer easy comfort; I simply listened, recognizing the profound shock of a man waking up from a long, carefully constructed delusion. Clara entered carrying three paper cups of black coffee, setting them down with efficient grace before sliding a fresh transcript toward Mark. It was the transcript of the estate manager's interview, detailing how Victoria had systematically cut off communication lines and bullied the domestic staff into absolute silence. Mark read the first two pages, his jaw tightening until the muscle jumped beneath his skin, his fingers trembling slightly as he turned the page. He didn't defend her; he didn't even mention her name. He simply asked what the state needed from him next to ensure that Lily's custody was fully secured and that the estate could never again be used as a cage. We spent the next hour mapping out the transition of guardianship, turning raw grief into a practical, unyielding strategy for survival.
