Chapter 9: The Ledger of Sins

I reached into the open safe, my fingers brushing against the cold leather spines of the ledgers. Pulling the top volume out, I flipped open the heavy pages under the dim glow of my penlight. The columns were meticulously detailed in Eleanor’s sharp, sloping handwriting—names of low-wage workers, dates of fabricated disciplinary infractions, amounts paid to corrupt local inspectors, and explicit notes regarding custody threats used to keep mothers in line. It was an entire paper trail of calculated cruelty, neatly organized and cataloged like a collector's prized insects.

"Look at this," I whispered, turning the book so Sarah could see the page detailing her own employment history. There, next to her name, was a record of every manufactured debt Eleanor had claimed she owed for broken household items, along with a signed affidavit extorting her silence under threat of losing Lily to state foster care.

Sarah stepped closer, her hand resting lightly on the edge of the mahogany desk. Tears welled in her eyes, but they were no longer tears of helplessness; they were fueled by a cold, righteous fury. "She kept every single lie written down," Sarah said, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "She thought she was untouchable. She believed nobody would ever have the courage to look inside her private vault."

"She was right, until tonight," I answered, pulling the encrypted flash drive from my pocket and setting it beside the desk lamp. I began feeding the physical ledgers one by one onto the glass surface of the high-speed portable scanner I had brought in my tactical bag. The quiet hum of the scanner was the only sound in the room, eating up the evidence page by page, converting Eleanor's darkest secrets into digital files that could never be erased or hidden again.

As the scanner light flashed rhythmically across the incriminating pages, a sudden noise from the hallway outside froze us in our tracks. It was the sharp click of a high-heeled shoe hitting the hardwood floor, followed by the familiar, cold, clipped tone of Eleanor Vance's voice barking orders at an early-morning attendant. Time had run out. We had seconds to grab the evidence, clear our digital footprint, and find a way out before the master of the house discovered us standing in the heart of her sanctuary.
