Chapter 12: The Federal Subpoena

The morning sun cast long, angled shadows across the limestone steps of the federal courthouse as Marcus Vance strode out to meet us on the plaza. His graying temples and sharp, bespectacled gaze carried the weight of twenty years prosecuting white-collar crime, but when he saw Sarah clutching the leather-bound ledger against her chest and Lily hiding safely behind my coat, his professional composure cracked. He didn't ask questions on the steps; he simply gestured for us to follow him through the heavy brass security doors and down a quiet corridor to his private chambers, away from the reporters who were just beginning to gather outside.

"Colton, when you called at dawn, I thought it was another corporate dispute," Marcus said, closing the frosted glass door and locking it securely before turning to face us. "Looking at these preliminary digital scans of the foundation accounts and the personnel debt contracts, this is systemic extortion. Eleanor Vance has been operating a private labor trafficking and embezzlement ring right under the city's nose."

"It's worse than embezzlement, Marcus," I replied, pulling out the physical affidavit Sarah had signed in the motel room. "She used the foundation's charitable facade to trap vulnerable women who had no legal representation, forcing them to sign away their passports and work off fabricated debts under the threat of losing their children."

Sarah stepped forward, her voice remarkably steady despite the dark circles under her eyes. "She took my passport the day I arrived from overseas, Mr. Vance. When I tried to leave with Lily two years ago, she showed me court documents she claimed she could file to declare me an unfit mother. Every time I earned a paycheck, she added more fees for room, board, and uniform maintenance until the ledger showed I owed her thousands of dollars I never borrowed."

Marcus listened intently, his pen scratching notes onto a yellow legal pad as he reviewed the physical receipts and the internal email threads we had downloaded from the estate servers. "The federal grand jury is already empaneled for next week on an unrelated tax case," Marcus said, looking up with a grim smile. "With these financial ledgers and the original payroll signatures, I can issue emergency search warrants and asset freezing orders before noon today. Eleanor won't have time to liquidate her offshore accounts."

"Do it now," I urged, resting a reassuring hand on Sarah's shoulder. "Before her lawyers realize the study was breached and wipe the central servers."

Marcus nodded grimly, picking up his desk phone to summon his lead investigator. "Federal marshals are already standing by. Let's dismantle an empire."
