Chapter 9: Confrontation at the Foundation

The lobby of the Sterling Heritage Foundation headquarters was a monument to manufactured prestige, featuring towering marble pillars, polished brass trim, and a massive reception desk where receptionists usually greeted high-society donors with practiced smiles today, however, the air was dead and heavy. Staff members whispered in hushed clusters near the elevators, their eyes darting nervously toward the front doors as I walked in, wearing my simple denim jacket and carrying a thick legal folder containing the state medical protective orders and David Vance’s latest investigative updates.

Security made a half-hearted move to intercept me, but I held up the state-stamped paperwork with absolute calm. "I’m here to deliver official legal correspondence for Marcus Sterling," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the expansive marble floor.

Before the guard could argue, the private elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed open, and Marcus stepped out. His expensive tailored suit was rumpled, his tie slightly askew, and the arrogant, untouchable smirk that had defined him in the hotel parking structure was completely gone. His face was pale, tight with panic as he caught sight of me standing by the reception desk.

"You," Marcus hissed, stepping forward quickly as if he wanted to physically block me from the remaining staff members. "You think a viral video and a few disgruntled ex-employees are going to ruin decades of philanthropic work? We will sue you into bankruptcy before the week is out. Your life will be completely dismantled."

I didn't flinch, holding my ground with the same steady breathing I had used when facing Cordelia over Margaret's fallen body. I stepped forward and dropped the thick legal binder directly onto the center of the polished mahogany reception desk, letting the heavy thud echo in the quiet lobby.

"You can threaten me all you want, Marcus, but the district attorney already has Dr. Vance's medical assessment of Margaret’s bruises," I said quietly, letting every word land with deliberate precision. "The financial fraud audits are already in the hands of federal investigators. Your foundation board is currently holding an emergency meeting to strip your name from every plaque in this building."

Marcus stared at the binder, his composure finally cracking entirely. His hands trembled slightly at his sides as he realized the full, irreversible scope of his exposure. The public glamour he had built his entire identity around had turned to ash under the harsh light of accountability.
