Chapter 13: The Grand Screens

Marcus climbed the wooden steps of the dais with measured, deliberate strides, adjusting his silver cufflinks before gripping the edges of the mahogany podium. The ballroom acoustics amplified every breath, carrying the heavy silence across hundreds of seated guests who now stared up at him with cold, detached curiosity. He cleared his throat, flashing the familiar, charismatic grin that had once charmed city councils and charity boards for over two decades. "Good evening, friends and lifelong partners in our shared philanthropic mission," Marcus began, his voice rich and steady, rolling effortlessly through the soaring vaulted ceiling. "In times of unprecedented challenge, malicious rumors inevitably arise from opportunistic corners. We must never allow transient noise to distract us from our enduring legacy of compassion and care."
From my vantage point near the service bar, I caught Sarah’s eye. She gave me a single, imperceptible nod. I pulled the encrypted flash drive from my blazer pocket, walked briskly to the technician's booth tucked behind the massive projection screens, and handed the small metal stick to the young AV engineer on duty. He looked at the court-sealed authorization document on my phone screen, swallowed hard, and slid the drive directly into the master playback terminal. "Are you absolutely sure about this?" he whispered, his hands hovering over the master override keys. "It’s going to broadcast live to every monitor in the building." I looked out past the soundboard toward Marcus, who was now halfway through a soaring anecdote about foundation integrity. "Play it," I said softly. "The truth has waited long enough."

With a sharp keystroke, the towering LED screens behind Marcus instantly flickered away from the polished corporate logo. The soaring blue graphics vanished, replaced by the shaky, high-definition footage captured on my smartphone under the glittering hotel chandelier just days ago. The audio echoed crisply through the professional sound system: Cordelia’s furious shriek—“Don't you dare touch my coat, you crazy old hag!”—bounced off the crystal chandelier and filled the expansive room with undeniable clarity. The camera panned down sharply, lingering unblinkingly on Margaret’s bruised, frail arm and the vivid crimson blood stain against the expensive fabric.
Marcus froze mid-sentence, his mouth hanging slightly open as his own voice echoed back at him from the towering monitors behind his head. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, gray tone under the stage lights. The ballroom erupted into sudden, deafening gasps and chaotic murmurs. Donors dropped their napkins, reporters scrambled for their recording devices, and the carefully constructed illusion of elite benevolence shattered into a million jagged pieces. Marcus stood paralyzed on the stage, staring up at the screen in absolute horror as the video looped, playing the irrefutable evidence of cruelty and greed to the very people he had spent a lifetime manipulating.
