Chapter 8: The Hidden Account

The mountain cabin was cold until Victor stoked the heavy stone fireplace, filling the small room with the dry, comforting scent of burning pine. While Ethan slept soundly on the improvised pallet of wool blankets we had arranged near the hearth, Victor pulled a heavy, dust-covered laptop from the back of his SUV. He placed it on the scarred wooden kitchen table, his leather gloves discarded beside a steaming mug of black coffee. Outside, the wind howled through the evergreen canopy, tossing heavy snow against the reinforced glass panes, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with intense concentration.
“Serena thinks her digital footprint is immaculate,” Victor said, his fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced precision. “She uses shell companies registered in Delaware and routed through offshore accounts in the Caymains. But when I set up the Blackwood estate’s original surveillance and accounting protocols five years ago, I installed a parallel ledger. A failsafe to protect the foundation from hostile takeovers. I just needed the physical security key from the mansion foyer to unlock the main archive.”
He turned the screen toward me. Rows of financial data, wire transfers, and encrypted asset allocations scrolled down the monitor. My eyes scanned the columns, stopping abruptly at a highlighted string of numbers tied to an inactive trust fund. The name listed as the primary beneficiary wasn't Serena. It was Ethan. And the secondary administrator with power of attorney wasn't his mother, but an unknown corporate entity tied directly to a pharmaceutical firm currently under federal investigation.
“She’s not just using him for social clout,” I whispered, the cold reality settling heavily into my chest as I stared at the glowing numbers. “She’s liquidating his entire inheritance to fund a hostile acquisition, and once the transaction clears next month, she planned to quietly hand him over to an institutional care facility under a fabricated medical exemption.”
Victor nodded grimly, his face illuminated by the harsh blue light of the screen. “Which is why she panicked the moment you refused to hand him over in the foyer that night. You didn't just disrupt her evening routine; you threw a wrench into a multi-million-dollar timeline that had been months in the making. Every day we stay hidden buys us time, but it also gives her legal team more ammunition to paint you as an unstable kidnapper in the local press.”

“We can’t just sit here waiting for her private investigators to stumble onto this cabin,” I said, leaning closer to the table, my hands resting flat against the scarred wood. “We need concrete, undeniable proof that can be broadcast publicly before she freezes our accounts and cuts off every digital avenue we have left.”
“Agreed,” Victor replied, his dark eyes locking onto mine with fierce determination. “Which means we have to reach out to someone on the inside. Someone who was there before Serena took over the estate and who knows where the physical backup servers are hidden beneath the ballroom.”
