Chapter 15: Sunlight on the Marble

Three weeks after the server download shattered the Blackwood empire, the morning sunlight poured unrestricted through the tall glass double doors of the mansion's foyer. The security camera mounted above had been deactivated, its red recording light permanently dark. The marble floor, once a stage for silent intimidation and cold control, now felt bright, warm, and entirely open.
I stood near the center of the foyer, wearing a simple cream-colored sweater and dark trousers, watching Ethan take his first unassisted steps across the polished stone. He laughed with pure, uninhibited joy, his beige romper brushing against the floor as he wobbled forward into my outstretched arms. I scooped him up, burying my face in his soft curls and breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo, the lingering phantom weight of fear finally dissolving from my chest.
Victor walked in through the front doors, having shed his heavy black suit and leather gloves for a simple charcoal jacket and open-collared shirt. He carried a small stack of finalized legal documents establishing an independent trust fund for Ethan's care, utilizing the recovered estate assets to fund child welfare advocacy programs—the very work I had left behind years ago.
"The federal prosecutors wrapped up their preliminary interviews an hour ago," Victor said quietly, stopping a few feet away with a genuine, relaxed smile that softened his sharp features. "Serena's trial is set for the autumn, and the foundation is officially under independent receivership. You have complete autonomy, Lily."
"And you?" I asked, looking up as Ethan reached out a small hand to touch Victor's lapel.

"I'm staying right here in the city to help rebuild what should have been protected all along," Victor answered, gently catching the toddler's tiny hand with a soft chuckle.
We walked out together through the double doors, stepping off the grand marble steps and onto the sunlit sidewalk. The mountain cabin, the midnight drives, and the tense server corridor felt like distant echoes from another lifetime. For the first time, there were no shadows waiting behind us—only an open road, clear skies, and a future built entirely on truth.
