Chapter 9: Confrontation at the Office

The glass-and-steel lobby of Vance & Associates downtown law firm hummed with sterile professionalism, a stark contrast to the chaotic motel room I had left an hour earlier. My brother Mark was waiting for me in a glass-walled conference room on the twelfth floor, pacing anxiously across the patterned carpet while adjusting his silk tie every few seconds. When I pushed the door open, he stopped short, staring at the thick manila folder clutched in my hands with a look of profound dread. "Clara, you shouldn't have come here in person," Mark stammered, his voice pitching upward in panic. "Dad's corporate counsel has people watching every major firm in the city. If they see you collaborating with David Vance on a direct litigation strategy, they’ll file an emergency injunction before the end of the day."
Before I could answer, the frosted glass door swung open, and David Vance himself stepped into the room—a sharp-eyed, silver-haired attorney in a bespoke charcoal suit whose reputation for dismantling corporate corruption preceded him by decades. He glanced at the manila folder in my hands, then looked directly into my eyes with a calm, piercing intensity. "Let her come in, Mark," Vance said smoothly, pulling out a chair at the head of the mahogany table. "Your sister just handed us the missing puzzle piece. We don't need to hide anymore." I stepped forward, dropping the complete collection of Thomas Miller’s affidavits and the dual-ledger photocopies right in front of my brother. Mark stared down at the documents, his face draining of all color as he recognized the handwritten signatures of our father's inner circle. The reality of what our family had protected for decades—and what he had silently enabled out of career cowardice—was finally laid bare under the bright boardroom lights.
"You knew about this, didn't you, Mark?" I asked softly, my voice devoid of anger, carrying only the weight of absolute exhaustion. "You knew he was systematically destroying people to protect his legacy, and you stayed silent because the checks cleared every month." Mark dropped his gaze to the polished wood of the table, unable to meet my eyes, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. He didn't deny it. The silence in the room stretched out, heavy and suffocating, until David Vance broke the tension by placing his hand on the stack of documents. "The evidence is clean, and the witness is credible," the lawyer stated quietly. "We bypass family court entirely. We take this straight to the U.S. Attorney’s office and file for immediate emergency emancipation and protective custody for Lily. Your father's empire is about to face a reckoning it can't buy its way out of."
