Chapter 14: The Husband's Visit

I unlatched the chain and pulled the door open fully, letting Julian Vance step into the cramped warmth of my apartment. He looked entirely out of place among the mismatched thrift-store furniture, the stack of nursing textbooks on the counter, and the small kitchenette where I cooked simple meals after double shifts. Yet, unlike Victoria, there was no arrogant sneer on his face, no flash of condescending disgust. Instead, Julian looked tired—worn down by the relentless demands of high society and the quiet, nagging suspicion that his immaculate wife had been hiding something profound behind her polished public facade. He set his leather briefcase on the small kitchen table and turned to face me, his eyes searching my features with an unsettling intensity.

"You look like her," Julian said quietly, the observation slipping out before he could catch it. "Around the eyes, especially when the light hits you a certain way. Victoria always told me she was an only child, that her parents died in a boating accident when she was a teenager, and that her entire past was buried in Europe. She was very thorough about the story."

"Of course she was," I said, leaning back against the kitchen counter and crossing my arms. "Lying was the only craft she truly mastered. Did she send you here to offer me a bigger check, or did she finally tell you the truth about the trailer park on County Road 14?"

Julian winced slightly at the mention of the location, confirming that Victoria had at least partially confessed under the weight of the ultimatum. He walked over to the small window, looking out at the drab street below before turning back to face me. "She didn't tell me everything until an hour ago, Chloe. She came home shaking—the first time I've ever seen her genuinely lose control since we met ten years ago. She spent the entire morning trying to draft an emergency injunction, calling judges and lawyers, trying to find a way to block whatever you're planning to release tonight at the gala. But when I looked at the copies of the birth certificates and the photos you left with her... I realized she couldn't outrun this anymore. And neither could I."

"You have a choice too, Julian," I said, holding his gaze. "You can stand up on that stage tonight beside her and pretend that none of this matters, or you can walk away before the floor collapses beneath both of you."

"I didn't marry a fraud," Julian said, his voice dropping into a somber, reflective tone. "Or at least, I didn't think I did. I married a woman who was driven, ambitious, and fiercely proud. But standing by someone while they build an empire on a foundation of cruelty and discarded family... that makes me an accomplice to something ugly. Victoria is terrified. Not just of losing her status, but of facing the little girl she left behind in the dirt."

"Fear doesn't excuse a lifetime of betrayal," I replied softly. "She had a chance to fix this herself, quietly, with dignity. She chose to wait until the very last minute, hoping she could intimidate me into silence."

Julian reached into his suit jacket, not for a checkbook or a contract, but for a small, heavy silver key, which he placed gently on the center of the wooden table. "She’s not going to the gala tonight, Chloe. At least, not the way she planned. She’s locked herself in her dressing room at the estate, and she refuses to come out. The gala starts in four hours, and the board is already panicking. Whatever you decide to do next... you should know that the house of cards is already falling down on its own."
