Chapter 9: The First Bloom

May arrived with glorious warmth, washing away the last traces of winter dampness and turning the rolling hills of the estate into an ocean of vivid emerald green. The grand restoration of Rosewood was nearing completion, and the entire property buzzed with purposeful energy.

Volunteers from the nearby agricultural college worked alongside Arthur, laying clean gravel pathways, repairing ornate stone balustrades, and installing solar-powered drip irrigation lines throughout the terraces. The Victorian glasshouse, completely re-glazed and fitted with climate-controlled ventilation, shone like a radiant crystal palace amidst the landscape.

On a warm Saturday morning, Clara walked along the central aisle of the main garden, carrying a small leather notebook to record the seasonal progress. Lily skipped alongside her, holding a wicker basket and inspecting every green bud with intense scrutiny.

"Mommy! Come quick!" Lily’s excited squeal echoed across the terrace.

Clara hurried over to the central circular bed—the Queen of the North plot that she and Eleanor had cleared back in November.

There, perched proudly upon a vigorous green cane covered in deep crimson thorns, a solitary bud had begun to unfurl its outer petals. The flower was an extraordinary, rich ruby red, shimmering with morning dew. Its fragrance was intoxicating—a delicate harmony of sweet damask rose, wild citrus, and warm spice.

It was the first bloom of Evelyn’s Grace.

Clara knelt beside the bush, gently cradling the stem between her fingers. Tears of profound relief welled in her eyes. The rootstock, which had survived seven years of bitter neglect beneath choking thorns, had not only survived—it had triumphed.

"Is that Grandma's rose?" Lily asked in a hushed whisper, leaning in close to inhale the sweet perfume.

"Yes, my love," Clara murmured, wiping a tear from her cheek. "That is your grandmother’s rose. It took a long time, but it remembered how to bloom."

Eleanor walked down the terrace stairs, dressed casually in linen trousers and gardening boots. Seeing her sister and niece kneeling by the bed, she approached quietly.

"Is it...?" Eleanor began.

Clara looked up and nodded, smiling through her tears. "It’s alive, Eleanor. The lineage is preserved."

Eleanor knelt beside them, gazing at the perfect crimson petals. She raised her hand, resting her knuckles beside the flower. The ruby set within her gold ring caught the morning sun, matching the vivid hue of the living rose petals with uncanny perfection.

"Mother would be so proud of you, Clara," Eleanor said softly, placing an arm around her sister's shoulders.

"She would be proud of us," Clara corrected gently. "Neither of us could have done this alone. You gave us the shelter to grow, and we gave this house its heart back."

Lily slipped between them, wrapping her small arms around both women’s necks. "I love our garden, Auntie Eleanor. It feels like magic."

"It is magic, darling," Eleanor smiled, kissing the top of Lily’s head. "The magic of never giving up on the things that truly matter."
