Chapter 5: Midnight Return to Shadows

The midnight air bit hard against my face as I steered my car down the long, winding drive toward the estate. The mansion loomed against the dark autumn sky like a bleached skull, its grand neoclassical facade stripped of warmth by the pale moonlight. Victoria would likely be in her private sitting room on the second floor, nursing another glass of vintage red wine and convincing herself that her ironclad control over the household remained absolute. She had no idea that the foundation beneath her feet was already fracturing. I parked beneath the deep shadow of the carriage house, killing the engine and cutting the headlights. The silence of the grounds was total, broken only by the dry rustle of dead leaves skittering across the gravel. I reached inside my trench coat, my fingers brushing against the heavy brass ring of household keys I had stripped from the hallway table hours earlier. Those keys were my ticket back into the belly of the beast. Walking silently across the flagstone terrace, I bypassed the main double doors and headed straight for the side service entrance. The iron latch yielded smoothly under the proper key, clicking open with a faint metallic breath. Inside, the grand hallway smelled faintly of floor wax and expensive perfume, the lingering ghost of Victoria's curated atmosphere. My pulse hammered a steady, rhythmic beat against my ribs, but my hands were completely steady. I needed to find Lily's medical journal and the financial ledgers detailing the trust distributions before dawn broke. Victoria kept her secure paperwork inside the mahogany wall safe hidden behind the oil painting in the ground-floor study. Every step I took across the polished hardwood echoed softly in the cavernous expanse of the hall. I moved with deliberate, measured caution, keeping close to the shadows where the wall sconces cast long, jagged silhouettes. The house felt vacant, yet it vibrated with a tense, suppressed energy, as if the walls themselves remembered every silent heartbreak they had witnessed. When I reached the heavy oak door of the study, I found it unlocked—a sign of Victoria's arrogant assumption that no one would ever dare breach her sanctuary. I pushed the door open, slipped inside into the velvety dark, and pulled the door shut behind me, plunging myself into the quiet focus of the work ahead.
