Chapter 10: The Grand Metropolitan

The towering glass facade of the Grand Metropolitan Hotel glittered under a canopy of sparkling white lights, casting long, elegant reflections across the wet asphalt where rows of luxury towncars discharged their wealthy occupants. A line of photographers stood behind velvet ropes, their camera flashes popping rhythmically as local dignitaries, politicians, and high-society patrons stepped out onto the red carpet in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos. When Jax’s matte-black cruiser pulled up discreetly near the side service entrance, the contrast couldn't have been sharper. We weren't here to join the VIP queue through the front doors; Jax had arranged for us to enter through a private service corridor that led directly backstage near the main ballroom, bypassing the security checkpoints designed to keep ordinary people out.

I stood in the dim corridor wearing the midnight-blue gown Mr. Henderson had tailored for me. The fabric felt cool and weightless against my skin, completely transforming my posture. Jax wore a clean, dark suit that fit his tall frame, though the rugged lines of his weathered face and the faint ink of tattoos visible at his collar gave him the unmistakable aura of a man who belonged to a different world entirely. As we walked down the carpeted hallway toward the wings of the grand ballroom, the muffled sound of a string quartet playing a classical arrangement drifted through the heavy double doors, mingling with the murmur of hundreds of wealthy guests enjoying cocktails before the main presentation.

Standing just behind the heavy velvet curtain of the stage left entrance, I could see the vast expanse of the ballroom. Crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceiling, casting a dazzling glow over round tables draped in white linen and surrounded by people holding crystal flutes of champagne. On the elevated stage at the far end of the room stood a polished mahogany podium flanked by digital screens displaying the glowing logo of The Evelyn Vance Heritage Foundation. My heart beat with a slow, heavy rhythm, steady and unbreakable. In a few moments, the lights would dim, the applause would rise, and the woman who had left a nine-year-old girl shivering on a dark highway would step up to claim a victory built entirely on lies.
