Chapter 15: The New Horizon
The morning mist was still clinging to the tall pines along the edge of the county highway when I tossed our last canvas duffel bag into the bed of my truck and slammed the tailgate shut with a solid, echoing thud. The old trailer behind the lumber yard was locked up for good, its keys sitting on the kitchen table alongside a note for the landlord settling my final accounts. Leo stood by the passenger-side door, wearing a brand-new denim jacket that actually fit him and clutching the old faded photograph and the folded paper letter in his small hands like a pair of sacred talismans. He looked up at me with those bright hazel eyes, full of a quiet, unshakable hope that had replaced the fear he carried when he first walked into the diner days ago. The small-town diner rally was nothing more than a memory now, and the rumors and stares of the town hall meeting felt like they belonged to a completely different lifetime.
I walked around the hood of the truck, opened the passenger door, and hoisted Leo up onto the worn vinyl seat, making sure his seatbelt clicked securely into place before closing the door with a reassuring pat on the metal frame. As I climbed into the driver's seat and turned the key, the vintage V8 engine roared to life with a deep, familiar rumble that vibrated right through the floorboards. I shifted into gear, released the emergency brake, and let the truck roll slowly out of the gravel lot onto the empty two-lane highway that stretched out before us beneath a clear, golden morning sky. We weren't running away from our past anymore; we were driving straight toward whatever came next, side by side, as father and son. Leo pressed his face against the side window, watching the familiar storefronts of the small town slip past us one by one until they dissolved into green fields and open road. I reached across the center console, resting my calloused hand briefly over his small knuckles, feeling his warm fingers curl naturally around mine as the horizon opened up wide and clean ahead.
