Chapter 4: Fractured Porcelain

The master bedroom door gave way with a soft click as I pushed it open. The room smelled faintly of lavender and expensive face cream, an aura of curated perfection that now felt entirely hollow. Clara was sitting at her mahogany vanity table, her back to me. She was wearing a silk robe, her long dark hair brushed back with immaculate precision. She didn't turn around when I entered; she simply watched my reflection in the triple-fold mirror, her expression locked into a mask of cold, defensive composure.

"You should be downstairs making breakfast for the children," Clara said, her voice smooth and devoid of any natural warmth. "Instead of wandering around my private quarters like an intruder."

"Your private quarters," I repeated, walking slowly toward her until I stood just a few feet behind her chair. "Clara, stop acting like nothing happened. The illusion is over. It's done."

She turned slowly in the vanity chair, crossing her legs and lifting her chin with a practiced air of haughty indifference. "If you are referring to last night's absurd theater, Ethan, I suggest you lower your voice. The neighbors already look at us as the pillar of this community. I will not have my reputation dragged through the mud because our daughter threw a tantrum and you decided to blame me for it."

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I simply reached into my pocket, pulled out Leo's smartphone, and laid it face-up on the polished glass surface of the vanity, right beside her crystal perfume bottles.

"It's not a tantrum, Clara," I said quietly, leaning down so my eyes met hers in the mirror. "And it's not a glitch. This is the cloud sync log from the main security server. It records every command sent from the hallway panel. Your administrative PIN was entered at six-fourteen yesterday evening. You manually locked the walk-in freezer while Mia was still inside."

For a fraction of a second, the carefully constructed mask slipped. Her eyes darted down to the glowing screen, and a subtle micro-expression of pure, unadulterated terror flickered across her features. Her breath hitched, her chest rising sharply beneath the silk robe. But just as quickly as the panic appeared, she forced it down, her jaw tightening into a hard, rigid line.

"That's a fabrication," she hissed, her voice dropping an octave as she stood up abruptly, knocking her hairbrush onto the carpet. "Anyone could have accessed that panel. You're trying to frame me. You want to take the children away, don't you? You've been planning this."

May you like

"No one framed you, Clara," I said, holding my ground, my voice steady and unwavering. "Leo preserved the data. The police digital forensics unit will verify it within the hour. I'm calling child protective services right now to file an emergency evaluation for Mia's safety. You are not staying in this house with my children another minute."

Her hands began to tremble slightly, her manicured fingers clawing into the fabric of her robe as the reality of her exposure finally began to sink in. The glamorous socialite facade was crumbling into ash, leaving only the cold, hard truth exposed in the harsh morning light.
