Chapter 8: The Mask Slips

Rebecca straightened her posture, lifting her chin with a defiant snap that betrayed the sudden tension in her shoulders. She crossed her arms over the intricate lace bodice of her wedding dress, attempting to reclaim an air of wounded authority that she had wielded so effortlessly in public for years.

"I have no idea what game you're playing, Ethan, but this is absurd," she said, her tone sharpening from fragile to accusatory. "You humiliated me in front of hundreds of guests, dragged our reputation through the dirt, and now you walk into my private study looking like an inquisitor over some childish prank? Sarah is unstable. Everyone in this town knows it. Whatever she gave Lily was engineered to destroy us."

I stopped a few feet away from her, keeping my expression entirely neutral. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. The quiet weight of the evidence I held was far more devastating than any shout.

"Sarah didn't orchestrate this alone, Rebecca," I replied steadily, pulling the financial ledger and the second photograph from the manila envelope. I laid them flat on the dark mahogany surface of the desk, right between us. "She didn't know the combination to the safety deposit box in the city. She didn't have the legal clearance to transfer those trust funds three years ago. But you did."

Rebecca stared down at the documents, her breath catching audibly in her throat. The color drained rapidly from her cheeks, leaving her skin stark against the dark fabric of the chair behind her. The defensive posture dissolved, replaced by a cold, rigid stillness. For the first time since I had known her, the immaculate socialite facade completely vanished, revealing the desperate, calculating stranger underneath.

"You went through my private files," she whispered, her voice losing all its theatrical warmth. It was flat, hard, and laced with venom.

"I went looking for the truth," I corrected her, my jaw tightening as I looked down at the signature she had forged so carefully. "And I found it. Every lie, every payoff to keep Sarah quiet, and every penny you stripped away while pretending to run those charitable foundations. It’s all here, documented down to the exact date and wire transfer."

She reached out with a trembling hand, as if to sweep the papers off the desk, but I moved faster, placing my palm firmly over the edge of the ledger.

"Don't," I warned softly. "The copies are already with my attorney, and the digital files are backed up securely. There's no hiding this anymore, Rebecca. The wedding is over."
