Chapter 10: The Arrival

The heavy steel service doors of the hotel pushed open with a muffled clang, admitting us into the backstage labyrinth of the grand ballroom. The distant, muffled murmur of hundreds of high-society guests filled the air, mingling with the faint scent of imported white roses, expensive champagne, and roasting duck. Overhead, the crystal chandeliers cast a blinding, brilliant light through the open archways leading out onto the main floor. The air back here was cool and sterile, smelling faintly of cleaning solvent and old concrete, a sharp contrast to the lavish excess just beyond the heavy velvet drapes.

Marcus Vance led the way, holding a secure leather briefcase containing the master copies of the forensic audit, flanked by two federal marshals whose dark windbreakers bore plain federal insignia. Their steady, measured footfalls echoed against the concrete floor, setting a relentless rhythm that matched the ticking of my own racing heart. Roman walked immediately behind them, holding Sophie’s small, warm hand in his large palm. I followed closely at their side, my olive jacket buttoned high, my chin held up despite the nervous fluttering in my chest.

We paused just behind the heavy crimson velvet curtains that separated the service corridor from the main dining floor. Through a small gap in the thick fabric, I could see the glittering expanse of the room: rows of white-clothed tables stretching toward a raised dais, flashbulbs popping against the polished oak walls, and dozens of influential city figures mingling in designer evening wear, completely unaware of the storm about to break over their heads. Silverware clinked against fine china, and bursts of polite laughter rose and fell like waves on a distant shore.

Standing near the center of the dais, dressed in a sparkling gold dress that caught every glimmer of light and a heavy pearl necklace resting against her collarbone, was Helena. She looked flushed, her blonde updo immaculate and sprayed into place, but her eyes darted frantically toward the side entrances every few seconds. She was scanning the crowd, desperately searching for the escape routes that Roman had systematically sealed off. Her anxiety was palpable even from a distance; the absolute control she had wielded for decades was beginning to fracture at the edges.

"Are you ready?" Roman looked down at Sophie, his intense, sharp-jawed face softening into an expression of fierce, protective tenderness that few people in this city had ever been privileged to see.

Sophie gave a small, brave nod, her long messy brown hair swaying around her shoulders as she squeezed his thumb tightly. "I'm ready, Daddy. I want everyone to know the truth. I'm not scared anymore."

"Let's move," Marcus murmured, signaling the federal marshals to take their positions on either flank.

The heavy velvet curtains parted smoothly under Marcus's steady pull. We stepped out from the shadows of the backstage area and directly onto the marble periphery ofওয়াল the grand ballroom. The transition from quiet obscurity to the blinding glare of society's spotlight was instantaneous. The sheer scale of the room seemed to press in on us, but the presence of the federal marshals and Roman’s towering frame created an impenetrable barrier around Sophie and me.

For a second, the ambient chatter of the room dipped, a ripple of confused whispers spreading from table to table as the high-society guests noticed our unconventional procession. They were expecting a charity auction and a speech about civic philanthropy; instead, they were receiving a reckoning. Flashbulbs from local press photographers stationed near the press box began to pop with rapid-fire precision, capturing the stark contrast between Helena’s sparkling gold-and-pearl opulence and our determined, grounded presence.

Helena froze mid-sentence while speaking to a prominent city councilman, her gaze locking onto us with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. She took a sharp step forward toward the edge of the dais, her manicured hands trembling slightly against the polished wood of the podium. The color drained slightly from her face beneath her carefully applied cosmetics, though she fought desperately to maintain her haughty exterior.

Before she could signal her private security detail to intercept us, Roman stepped forward into the center aisle, lifting a single hand to halt the room in its tracks. The imposing weight of his presence cut through the murmurs like a knife, silencing the entire hall until you could have heard a pin drop on the thick carpet.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Roman's deep, resonant voice carried effortlessly across the cavernous room, echoing off the crystal chandeliers and bouncing against the wood-paneled walls. "Before this luncheon proceeds any further, there is an accounting that needs to be settled."
