Chapter 2: The Sound of Breaking Glass

Julian went completely rigid beside me. The polished smile vanished from his face so fast it was as if a physical blow had struck him. He stood up abruptly, the legs of his chair scraping sharply against the polished wood floor, the sound ringing out loudly in the sudden, heavy silence of the ballroom. His eyes were wide with utter shock and disbelief, darting from the little girl in the red velvet dress back to my frozen form on the gold chair.

"What did you just say?" Julian demanded, his voice rising, carrying an edge of sharp, defensive fury that cut through the dead air of the room. He took a step toward the child, his fists clenching at his sides inside the tailored pockets of his tuxedo trousers.

Before the little girl could answer, a sharp, metallic click of heels echoed across the parquet. Vivienne pushed her way through the paralyzed crowd from the opposite side of the room. Encased in a dark blue strapless gown that hugged her tall frame, her dark hair swept back in a severe chignon, she looked like an executioner stepping onto a scaffold. Her face was twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. She didn't look at Julian; her furious gaze locked straight onto me.

"She’s a lying brat! Don’t listen to a stupid kid!" Vivienne shouted across the ballroom, her voice ringing with hysterical overcompensation. She strode right up to the little girl, stepping between Julian and the child, her hands waving dismissively. "Some people will say anything for attention at a charity event. Security, remove this woman and her chaperone immediately!"

The guests began to murmur, shifting uneasily. Cameras flashed from the press balcony, capturing every micro-expression of panic crossing my face. I remained seated on the gold chair, my fingers gripping the arms so hard my knuckles turned translucent. I could feel the sweat beading along my hairline, threatening to ruin the careful dusting of powder. Vivienne was trying to save the room, but her desperation was too loud, too calculated. Everyone in the room could sense the blood in the water.

The little girl didn't flinch under Vivienne's assault. She stood her ground, her chin lifting defiantly as she turned her wide, clear eyes from Vivienne back toward me.

"I saw her take it out of the closet!" the girl said firmly, her voice carrying across the entire length of the hall with devastating clarity. "She had a pillowcase in her hand and everything!"

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Julian stopped dead in his tracks, turning back to look down at me. The look in his eyes had shifted from shock to a cold, calculating horror. He wasn't looking at a wife in distress; he was looking at a liability that threatened to destroy his entire public empire in a matter of seconds.
