Chapter 10: The Maintenance Shed

The municipal park maintenance shed sat quietly behind a rusted chain-link fence, surrounded by tall weeds and towering oak trees that blocked it from the view of the nearby jogging paths. The corrugated metal siding was streaked with rust, and the wooden porch boards groaned beneath our boots as we approached the side entrance. I tested the heavy padlock clasp; it was old, rusted through by decades of seasonal moisture. With a sharp tug and a suppressed prayer, the corroded staple gave way, allowing the door to swing inward with a muffled, oily creak.

Inside, the shed smelled of gasoline, damp earth, and motor oil. Lawnmowers, spare tires, and shovels lined the walls, casting long, crooked shadows in the dim morning light filtering through the grimy windows. I pushed aside a heavy stack of unused drainage pipes in the rear corner to reveal a wooden trapdoor set flush into the concrete floor. Lifting the heavy panel required all my strength, and a stale wave of subterranean air drifted up from the dark void below.

"Clara, grab that flashlight," I said, pointing to a heavy-duty yellow work light sitting on a nearby workbench. She switched it on, casting a bright, steady beam down a steep wooden ladder that descended into a small, concrete-walled storm cellar.

We climbed down into the dry enclosure, which contained a rusted iron cot, a stack of emergency woolen blankets, and a metal shelf with bottled water left over from previous seasons. I gently laid Lily down on the cot, wrapping her in the rough blankets to warm her shivering limbs. She was fast asleep now, exhausted by the night's relentless ordeal. Clara locked the trapdoor from the inside and pulled a heavy workbench over the top to mask its location from anyone entering the shed above.

"This buys us a few hours," Clara said, leaning against the damp concrete wall as she caught her breath. "We need to finalize the broadcast plan for tonight's charity gala. Margaret is scheduled to give the keynote address at the downtown cultural center at eight o'clock. That's when the local news crews and national syndicates will have their cameras rolling."
