Chapter 8: The Kitchen Table

David walked slowly down the remaining steps, ignoring the flash drive in my hand as he crossed the hardwood floor toward the kitchen table. The morning light filtered through the sheer curtains, casting long, pale stripes across the worn oak surface where we had shared countless breakfasts before our world imploded. He pulled out a wooden chair and sat down heavily, resting his face in his hands for a long, silent moment before looking up at me. "Sit down, Claire," he said quietly, his voice hollow and exhausted. I pulled out the chair opposite him, sliding the small black USB drive across the table between us like a peace offering, while Martha gracefully poured herself another cup of coffee by the counter, lingering in the background like a watchful shadow.

"Just plug it into my laptop, David," I urged, leaning forward, my voice urgent and pleading. "Leo Miller verified the server timestamps. The video file was modified from the basement router at 8:14 AM yesterday. The camera didn't capture an accident; it captured a staged manipulation."

David stared at the plastic drive on the table, his fingers tapping a nervous, erratic rhythm against the wood. He didn't reach for it. Instead, he looked up at me with eyes that held a devastating mixture of sorrow and fear. "Claire... even if someone accessed the router... how do I know you didn't ask someone to hack it? How do I know this isn't just another layer of evasion?"

The words hit me like a physical blow to the chest. The gaslighting had done its work; even with physical proof, the seed of doubt Martha had planted in his mind had taken deep root. "You think I engineered my own framing?" I whispered, my voice cracking. "Look at me, David! Look at my life! Why would I ever hurt Sophie?"

Before David could answer, Martha suddenly gasped from across the kitchen, her hand flying to her chest as she swayed dramatically against the counter. Her coffee cup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the tile floor with a sharp crash, sending dark brown liquid splattering across her sensible shoes. "Oh..." Martha breathed out, her eyes rolling back slightly as she clutched her left arm. "David... my chest... the stress... I can't..."

"Mom!" David shouted, instantly abandoning the table and rushing to her side as her knees buckled. He caught her just before she hit the floor, panic flooding his face as he looked up at me with absolute fury. "Look what you're doing to her, Claire! You're destroying this family!"

As David hoisted his mother into his arms to carry her toward the living room sofa, I stood alone by the kitchen table, looking down at the shattered ceramic and the flash drive lying ignored on the wood. Martha had used her final weapon—feigned medical distress—to derail the truth once again, sealing my isolation more effectively than any locked door ever could.
