Chapter 6: Chambers Silence

The heavy oak door of Judge Sterling's chambers closed with a dull, muffled thud, cutting off the low murmur of the courtroom gallery outside. The room smelled of old leather-bound case files, furniture polish, and the faint metallic tang of rain blowing against the high arched windows. I stood near the corner of the mahogany bookcase, my hands clasped tightly together inside the pockets of my wool coat to keep them from shaking. My badge from Vance & Associates still rested in my bag, heavy and useless like a dead weight.
Judge Sterling did not sit behind his massive desk. Instead, he stood by the window, looking out over the wet stone courtyard below where gray afternoon light pooled in the puddles. His black robes rustled softly as he turned around, his lined face set in a deep, weary frown. Across the room, Lily sat quietly on a plaid sofa, her small bare feet tucked beneath her pink nightgown. Her mother, Sarah, knelt beside her, wrapping a wool blanket around the child's shoulders while whispering soft reassurances.
Elena Vance sat across the room in a straight-backed wooden chair, her posture rigid. The color had not fully returned to her cheeks; her skin possessed the grayish tint of spoiled milk under the fluorescent light. She kept her eyes fixed on the small pink voice recorder resting squarely in the center of the judge's desk, flanked by a pair of white cotton evidence gloves.
"The device is active," Judge Sterling said, his voice dropping an octave as he rested his knuckles on the edge of the wood. "It was handed directly to the court by a minor, outside standard discovery protocol. Under normal circumstances, counselor, I would throw this out and penalize the defense for introducing unverified hearsay. However, you looked at that recorder, Ms. Vance, and your reaction went far beyond surprise."
Elena swallowed hard, her throat working visibly. She lifted her chin, attempting to summon the cold, untouchable authority that usually filled her corner offices on the fortieth floor. "Your Honor, that is a child's toy. It contains nothing more than imaginative babble recorded during a messy domestic dispute. My reaction was simple shock at the utter impropriety of allowing a minor to disrupt a federal courtroom with manipulated props."
"Manipulated props," I murmured before I could stop myself.
Elena snapped her head toward me, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious heat. "You are finished here, Clara. You breached your non-disclosure agreement the moment you walked out of that firm. You have no standing in this room."
"She has standing as a witness to the internal document filings," Judge Sterling intervened, his voice cutting through Elena's hostility like a scalpel. He looked back down at the pink plastic recorder. "Ms. Hayes approached my clerk five minutes ago with a formal request to depose on the chain of custody regarding the original financial statements submitted in this case. She claims the digital logs were scrubbed."
Elena stood up abruptly, her chair scraping against the floorboards with a sharp, ugly shriek. "This is a conspiracy! A coordinated attack by a disgruntled former employee and a desperate mother who lost custody fair and square under the statutory guidelines!"

"Sit down, Ms. Vance," the judge said softly. It wasn't a shout, but the sheer weight of authority behind it forced Elena back into her seat. Sterling picked up the pink recorder with a gloved hand, turning it over to inspect the battery compartment. "The court will impound this device. We will convene an independent forensic audit tomorrow morning at eight o'clock sharp. Until then, Ms. Vance, you are suspended from participating in any active filings under this docket. Guard your words very carefully."
Sarah looked up from Lily, her eyes bright with unshed tears. For the first time in months, the crushing weight on her shoulders seemed to shift just an inch. As the judge dismissed us into the gray hallway, I caught Elena’s gaze. Her eyes held no grief for her collapsing career, only a cold, sharp promise of retaliation that chilled me to the bone.
