Chapter 6: The Unedited Truth

The basement of Apex Security smelled of hot circuit boards, stale coffee, and industrial carpet cleaner. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed with a low, irritating hum that matched the nervous energy drumming in my chest. Across the scuffed metal workbench sat Leo, a tired-looking technician in his late thirties with ink-stained fingers and a messy mop of brown hair, staring intently at the laptop screen where the hot-swappable drive I had retrieved from Marcus's library was now mounted.

"Well, Mrs. Sterling," Leo muttered, tapping a series of commands into the terminal window as streams of hex code scrolled down the screen. "Your husband’s IT guys are thorough, but they’re lazy when it comes to edge-device synchronization. They purged the cloud logs, but they forgot that local dome cameras maintain an independent ring-buffer on physical flash memory."

I leaned over the edge of the metal table, my breath catching in my throat as the file directory resolved into a series of uncompressed MP4 containers. "Can you pull the raw feed from the night of the gala? The exact twelve-second window around the shattered glass table?"

"Right here," Leo said, hitting the enter key.

The screen flickered, and the high-definition video feed sprang to life with pristine, chilling clarity. The timestamp in the corner read 21:42:15.

The wide shot of the luxury salon appeared on the monitor. On screen, I stood near the marble mantelpiece, looking shocked. A fraction of a second later, the video showed Elena—long before the supposed accidental trip—deliberately checking her footing on the glossy marble floor, turning her head toward the doorway to ensure the angle was clear, and then actively throwing her weight backward into the decorative glass table. There was no stumble, no loss of balance, no accidental slip. It was a calculated, theatrical performance executed with cold precision.

I watched the screen in absolute silence, the cold knot in my stomach dissolving into a clear, sharp resolve. The physical evidence was right there, unalterable and undeniable.

"Holy hell," Leo breathed, leaning back in his chair and running a hand through his hair. "She threw herself down. That wasn't an accident at all. If this footage gets out, your husband’s entire social standing—and her little setup—is going up in smoke."

"It's going to get out, Leo," I said, my voice steady and cold as ice. "Every single second of it."

"You realize what Marcus will do, right?" Leo warned, looking up at me with genuine concern in his eyes. "A guy with his money and connections doesn't just take a hit like this lying down. He’ll come after whoever leaked it."

"Let him try," I replied, pulling a small, encrypted thumb drive from my purse and plugging it into the secondary USB port. "Copy the master file to this drive, along with the system diagnostic logs proving the file is authentic and unedited."

Leo nodded, quickly executing the transfer progress bar as it steadily climbed to one hundred percent. He ejected the drive and handed it back to me across the metal desk. "It's all there. Uncompressed, metadata intact, cryptographically signed by the camera's internal firmware. Nobody can claim this was doctored."

I took the small piece of plastic, feeling its negligible weight in my palm. It was tiny, yet it carried enough explosive power to shatter an entire empire built on lies, money, and polished public image.

"Thank you, Leo," I said, slipping the drive into the secret inner pocket of my coat. "Your discretion will be well-rewarded once the legal proceedings are finalized."

"Keep it," Leo said with a faint, tired smile. "I’ve done contract work for Marcus Sterling for five years, and his corporate arrogance has cost me more headaches than it’s worth. Go break his gilded cage, Clara."

I walked out of the dingy office into the cool evening air, clutching the drive tightly against my ribs. The foundation charity gala was scheduled for tomorrow night at the grand ballroom downtown. Marcus expected me to stand by his side, smiling politely while he spun his narrative of family tragedy and recovery. Instead, I was going to give him and his precious Elena a performance they would never forget.
