Chapter 9: Digital Forensics
Marcus’s secure apartment felt more like a command center than a home by the time evening settled over the city. Multiple monitors glowed with lines of code, financial ledger spreadsheets, and encrypted cloud synchronization status bars. The blue light cast shifting shadows across the walls, illuminating the coffee cups, empty takeout containers, and half-eaten sandwiches that marked hours of unbroken, intense labor. Every surface seemed cluttered with technology, from tangled charging cables to backup hard drives humming softly against the polished wood of his desk.
"We're locked in," Marcus said, his fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard with practiced precision, the click-clack echoing rhythmically through the quiet room. "All backup files—the bank transfers, the shell corporation registries, the school neglect reports, and the master video file from your phone—have been mirrored across three secure, un-deletable cloud servers located in jurisdictions that Jeffrey's corporate lawyers can't touch with a dozen injunctions."
I stood beside him, watching the progress bars turn solid green one by one, feeling a strange mixture of relief and lingering dread settle into my bones. On the couch nearby, Liam was finally fast asleep, curled beneath a soft plaid blanket, his breathing deep and even, entirely free from the restless tossing and terrified murmurs that had plagued him every single night since we had fled the house.
"Is it enough?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper so as not to wake him, clutching a mug of lukewarm coffee between my palms for warmth. "When we walk into the magistrate's office at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, will it actually stand up against their high-priced legal team? You know how deeply entrenched Jeffrey is in this city's network of influence."
Marcus stopped typing, spun his ergonomic chair around, and looked up at me with absolute certainty in his eyes, his expression steady and reassuring. "Elena, what you have here isn't just a messy, bitter divorce filing. It's a comprehensive, bulletproof dossier of systematic domestic endangerment combined with corporate financial fraud. When the judge sees the metadata on that smartphone video—showing the exact timestamp, GPS coordinates, and the undeniable audio recording of Eleanor’s own words calling your five-year-old son an animal—coupled with the paper trail of millions siphoned from public charities into Jeffrey's private offshore real estate holdings, a temporary protective order is just the starting point."
He tapped the side of the sleek aluminum external hard drive resting near his keyboard. "Jeffrey's corporate attorneys can throw all the money they want at this, but they can't rewrite digital timestamps, and they can't un-record the fact that their golden-boy client watched his own flesh and blood get treated like trash in his own dining room while his mother cheered it on."

I walked over to the couch, gently adjusting the blanket over Liam’s small shoulder, feeling the quiet warmth of his chest rise and fall against my fingertips. The road ahead of us was still terrifyingly long, and the public fallout would be catastrophic for the Vance family once the media got wind of the embezzlement, but for the first time in years, the suffocating fear that had gripped my throat was gone, entirely replaced by a cold, unshakeable clarity.
"Let's print the final exhibit packets," I said, straightening up and turning back to face Marcus with a firm, determined nod. "Tomorrow morning, we end the illusion once and for all."
