Chapter 9: The Restaurant Launch

The grand opening of Julian’s flagship restaurant, Aura, was the premier social event of the season, drawing local politicians, food critics, and society columnists from across the state. Floodlights swept the night sky outside the restored historic warehouse downtown, illuminating the red carpet where photographers clamored for a glimpse of the city's culinary elite. I stood across the street in the shadows of a brick storefront, wearing a simple navy coat, holding a thick manila envelope against my chest. Marcus stood a few paces behind me, his presence a quiet anchor in the chilly autumn air.

Julian stepped out of a sleek black town car, smiling brilliantly for the cameras, flanked by his primary investors and PR managers. He looked every bit the triumphant culinary visionary, basking in the applause and flashbulbs. He had spent the last two weeks using his PR machine to paint me as an unstable, vindictive ex-wife trying to sabotage his life’s work out of spite. The public narrative was heavily tilted in his favor, and the local food blogs had already begun publishing glowing advance profiles of the restaurant's exclusive menu.

I waited until the initial press scrum parted as Julian moved toward the velvet-roped entrance. Then, flanked by Marcus, I crossed the street directly into the light of the media zone. A sharp-eyed reporter from the city's leading investigative paper recognized me first. "Mrs. Vance! Is it true you're contesting the business assets?" she called out, thrusting a recorder forward. Flashbulbs instantly pivoted away from Julian and blinded us instead, the crowd gasping as they realized who I was and why I was standing here.

Julian froze on the steps of the restaurant, his smile shattering as he saw me approaching the press line. He shouted frantically for his security team, but it was too late. I stepped up to the edge of the velvet rope, pulled a stack of printed financial summaries from my envelope—documenting the exact shell companies and embezzled funds used to finance Aura—and handed them directly into the hands of the stunned investigative reporter. "There is no visionary genius here," I said clearly into the bank of microphones. "The entire restaurant was funded by money stolen from family accounts and hidden offshore. The audit report is right here."

Pandemonium erupted on the red carpet. Reporters shouted overlapping questions, cameras flashed furiously, and Julian’s PR director lunged forward, trying to block the lenses. Within minutes, uniformed police officers arrived in response to the commotion, moving through the crowd to secure the area. As two officers gently escorted me away from the property for trespassing, I caught one final glimpse of Julian. He was standing paralyzed on the steps of his burning empire, watching his glittering public image collapse in real time.
