Chapter 3: The Weight of Obedience

The door opened just an inch before Doña Esther stepped back into the bedroom alone. She moved with a terrifying, effortless grace for a woman in her sixties, her dark blue silk dress whispering against the parquet floor. She didn't look at the bed; she walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the manicured gardens and the private security gates glowing amber in the fog.

"You are playing a dangerous game, Valeria," Esther said softly, not turning around to face me. Her reflection in the dark glass was sharp and unyielding. "Alejandro is a successful man. He has a company to run, a legacy to protect. He cannot be burdened by a wife who invents stories about her physician."

I pulled the white satin robe tighter around my throat, my voice steadying through sheer exhaustion. "Dr. Vance isn't treating me, Esther. He’s keeping me drugged. My legs... I can barely stand on them without assistance."

Esther turned slowly, a thin, pitying smile touching the corners of her painted lips. "Marcus Vance is a brilliant man. He saved this family from scandal thirty years ago when Alejandro's father passed, and he is keeping you safe now. Pregnancies like yours—frail, unstable—require strict management. If you make scenes like this in front of my son again, you won't just lose the freedom of this penthouse. You’ll lose the nursery downstairs."

The threat was delivered with such casual cruelty that the breath caught in my throat. She was talking about the child, my baby, whom she intended to claim the moment it was born, raising it as another obedient brick in the family foundation.

"You can't keep me locked up forever," I whispered, though the words sounded hollow even to my own ears.

"Forever is a very long time, my dear," Esther replied, stepping closer to the bed and reaching out to pat my knee with a hand that felt as cold as river ice. The pressure of her fingers directly over the bruised flesh made me bite my lip until I tasted copper. "Rest now. Marcus will be by tomorrow morning for your regular check-up. You will be a good girl, won't you?"

She waited for my nod—a small, broken concession that cost me every ounce of my dignity—before turning on her heel. She walked to the door, pulled it shut behind her, and this time, the heavy iron bolt slid into place from the outside with a definitive, chilling thud.
