Chapter 6: The Broadcast Witness

Back in the secure estate high above the city, the air smelled faintly of cedar and rain. The massive arched window offered a sweeping view of the glittering skyline, a dizzying constellation of wealth and power that looked entirely different when you knew the rot buried beneath its foundations.
Elena sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, a heavy wool blanket draped over her shoulders, her pale face illuminated by the soft glow of a wall-mounted monitor. On the screen, the live broadcast of the Whitmore Foundation Gala continued unabated, a endless loop of glittering crystal chandeliers, smiling politicians, and high-society patrons drinking champagne while pretending the world outside their velvet ropes didn't exist.
"Pause there," I said quietly, stepping into the room with a fresh cup of tea and setting it on the mahogany table beside her.
Elena reached for the remote, her thumb pressing the silver button. The frame froze on a cluster of gala attendees standing near the eastern terrace doors—a group of affluent socialites laughing under the flashbulbs of society photographers.
"Look at her face," Elena whispered, pointing a trembling finger at a young woman in an emerald silk evening gown standing slightly apart from the main group. The woman's smile was perfectly fixed, her posture rigid, but her eyes—wide, hollow, and darting frantically toward the exit—told a completely different story. "That’s Clara Vance. No relation to me, but... she interned at the district court last summer."
I leaned in closer, studying the high-definition freeze-frame. Clara’s fingers were clutching the stem of her champagne flute so tightly her knuckles were stark white. Standing directly behind her, casually resting a hand on the small of her back with a terrifying display of possessiveness, was a senior partner from Bryce’s defense firm.
"She's trapped," I said, my voice flat, devoid of emotion, though the internal machinery of my mind was already calculating angles, exits, and security protocols. "She didn't come by choice tonight. They brought her to keep up appearances after the rumor mill started spinning about the office."
Elena looked up at me, her dark eyes fierce despite her lingering bruises. "She was next, Victor. I saw the way Bryce looked at her during the judicial banquet two months ago. She tried to resign last month, and suddenly her family's commercial real estate loans were called in by a Whitmore-affiliated bank."
"Systemic coercion," I said, straightening up as I pulled out my secure phone. "They don't just use physical force; they construct an entire financial and social cage around anyone who gets too close to the truth."
"Can we reach her?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "We can't just leave her down there in that ballroom while we wait for the federal warrants to clear. Look at her—she’s on the verge of breaking."

I stared at the screen, watching the silent terror play out in high-resolution technicolor against the backdrop of elite celebration. The circle of witnesses was no longer an abstract list of names on a stolen ledger; it was a living, breathing person standing twenty floors above the city streets, waiting for someone to crack the door open.
"We don't wait," I said, unlocking the device and dialing a direct, encrypted frequency. "I'm deploying an extraction team right now. We pull her out before the gala ends."
