Chapter 9: The East Parlor

The East Parlor was bathed in the warm, artificial glow of crystal chandeliers and a roaring stone fireplace. Wealthy donors and board members milled about in elegant evening wear, their laughter and polite conversation forming a soft, cultured hum that masked the razor-sharp ambitions driving every interaction. As I stepped through the double mahogany doors, the heavy scent of expensive perfume and aged bourbon washed over me.

Heath stood by the mantelpiece, a tall, impeccably tailored man in a midnight-blue tuxedo, his silver-streaked hair brushed back with absolute precision. He held his crystal glass aloft, laughing softly at something the local district attorney said, but the moment I crossed the threshold, his sharp eyes locked onto mine.

"Ethan," Heath called out, his voice rich and resonant, carrying easily across the crowded room. He excused himself from the group and walked toward me, his smile never quite reaching his eyes. "There you are. The foundation's golden boy. We were beginning to wonder if you got lost reviewing the gala logistics."

"Just handling some unexpected estate matters, Heath," I replied, keeping my voice perfectly even, forcing every muscle in my face to remain relaxed.

Heath stopped inches from me, lowering his voice so it was masked by the surrounding chatter. "Estate matters? Strange. Morris mentioned you spent an unusual amount of time near the west drive earlier. Around the time my car arrived."

"Your car had a mechanical issue with the trunk latch," I said, holding his gaze without blinking. "A minor distraction. But it's sorted now."

Heath’s smile tightened, the micro-expression of genuine unease flashing across his sharp features before he masked it with practiced charm. He took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied my expression.

"Everything on this property is under control, Ethan," Heath murmured, his tone dropping into a quiet, proprietary warning. "The foundation relies on stability. On a pristine public image. Anything that threatens that stability... tends to be dealt with swiftly and quietly."

"Is that why you keep people locked away in the dark, Heath?" I asked softly, the words hanging between us like a drawn blade.

For a fraction of a second, the color drained from Heath’s face, though his posture remained rigid. The polished veneer of the philanthropist cracked just enough to reveal the cold, calculating predator underneath.
