Chapter 11: The Golden Easel

"...our unwavering commitment to transparency, community development, and the future of regional philanthropy," Preston’s voice resonated through the auditorium, smooth and dripping with fabricated humility. "Every dollar entrusted to the Horizon Foundation has been meticulously managed to ensure that our city's most vulnerable citizens find a safe harbor..."
Standing just three paces behind the heavy velvet curtain, I watched the absolute ease with which he lied to hundreds of the most influential people in the state. The applause that followed his opening remarks was deafening, a rolling wave of sycophantic approval that shook the crystal pendants of the chandelier overhead. Preston raised a hand modestly, basking in the glow of the stage lights, entirely blind to the shift in the atmosphere just beyond the wings.
Vincent raised his hand and gave a sharp, decisive two-finger signal to the sound and lighting booth high above the ballroom floor.
Instantly, the ambient house lights dimmed by half. Before the crowd could murmur in confusion, the blinding spotlight tracking Preston at the podium flickered and snapped toward the stage right corridor. With a smooth, mechanical hiss, the heavy black velvet drapery covering the golden easel pulled away, revealing the comprehensive forensic financial audit, its pages bound in black leather and backed by enlarged forensic graphics detailing offshore shell companies, embezzled charity grants, and forged zoning permits signed in Preston’s own hand.
A collective intake of breath swept through the front rows like a cold draft. The music cut off mid-measure.
Preston stopped mid-sentence, his smile freezing instantly into a hard, unyielding grimace as he turned away from the podium to look at the massive screens now projecting his financial crimes in stark, high-definition black and white. For three agonizing seconds, absolute silence reigned in the grand ballroom—a profound, breathless stillness where the only sound was the frantic clicking of camera shutters from the press gallery near the back.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Vincent’s voice boomed across the master audio system, rich with authority and completely devoid of hesitation. "Before you applaud the foundation's legacy, perhaps you should examine the actual cost of Mr. Vance's philanthropy."
Chaos erupted. Shouts of shock and outrage bounced off the marble walls as reporters surged forward, shoving past startled security guards to get a clear view of the ledger pages displayed on the main monitors. Preston slammed his hands down onto the mahogany podium, his face draining of color before flushing a violent, mottled crimson.
"Turn those off!" Preston roared into the live microphone, his polished veneer completely shattering as panic cracked his voice. "This is a malicious, coordinated smear campaign! Security! Remove these trespassers immediately!"
He lunged away from the podium, his tuxedo jacket flying open as he charged toward the stage wings where I stood. His eyes were wide, dilated with rage and desperation, the mask of the charismatic corporate titan entirely incinerated. He reached out a hand, fingers clawing the air, aiming directly for my throat as if a final act of physical intimidation could somehow erase the public exposure playing out on national television.
I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I stood completely still, my hands resting at my sides, watching him approach with the cold clarity of someone looking at a ghost.
Before Preston could take another step, Vincent moved with astonishing speed. He intercepted Preston mid-stride, his heavy shoulder slamming into Preston's chest with calculated, devastating force. Preston stumbled backward, crashing hard against the staging stairs, gasping for breath as Vincent towered over him, his face a mask of stern, immovable justice.

"Stay where you are, Preston," Vincent commanded, his voice ringing out across the silent, stunned hall. "Your time of intimidation is officially over."
From the main entrance doors at the back of the ballroom, the heavy oak panels swung open wide. Two state law enforcement officers in dark uniforms marched briskly down the central aisle, warrants in hand, their heavy boots echoing rhythmically against the marble floor as flashbulbs continued to fire in a relentless, blinding storm.
