Chapter 5: The Driveway Repossession

The morning fog hung heavy over the gravel courtyard, blurring the edges of the grand mansion's white pillars into ghostly silhouettes. The luxury black sedan sat parked directly beneath the portico, its polished body reflecting the gray dawn sky.

Elena stood by the driver's side door in her crisp white button-down and tailored trousers, her sleek dark bun pristine, her golden hoop earrings catching the first pale rays of sunlight. She was holding a leather overnight bag, her expression a mask of haughty irritation as she waited for her driver to arrive. She hadn't expected Arthur to intercept her departure, nor had she expected the two estate security guards standing by the stone steps with folded arms.

Arthur walked out from the double doors alone, his silver-white hair gleaming in the morning mist. He wore his navy double-breasted suit, though the tie was absent today, his collar open slightly. I stood a few paces behind him on the porch, with Toby safely inside the doorway, peering through the glass panels while clutching a small cup of cocoa.

"What is the meaning of this, Arthur?" Elena demanded, her voice carrying sharply across the gravel. "Your lawyers are idiots. They locked my accounts by midnight. Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for my committee friends?"

"Your committee friends will soon be reading the financial disclosures currently sitting on the state prosecutor's desk," Arthur replied calmly, stopping ten feet from the sedan. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy metal key ring, tossing it through the air with a casual flick of his wrist.

Elena instinctively threw her hands up, the keys clattering against the gravel at her feet.

"The accounts are frozen, the foundation audit is underway, and this car is no longer yours," Arthur said, his voice entirely devoid of inflection, echoing the exact tone he had used in the hallway the day before.

Elena stared at the keys in the dirt, then slowly raised her gaze to meet Arthur's cold, level stare. For the first time since I had met her, the mask slipped entirely, revealing the panicked, desperate woman underneath the designer clothes.

"You can't do this," she whispered, taking a half-step forward. "I made this family respectable. I made you relevant."

"You made a ledger of cruelty," Arthur said, turning his back on her as he gestured for the security guards to clear the drive. He walked back toward the porch where I stood waiting with Toby. As he reached the bottom step, he looked up at me, the harsh morning light softening in his gray eyes. "Let's go inside, Clara. There's a room upstairs that needs a proper child living in it."
