Chapter 8: The Foundation Gala

The grand ballroom of the Vance Memorial Center glittered under thousands of crystal pendants, reflecting an ocean of expensive gowns, tailored tuxedos, and shimmering champagne flutes. It was the annual charity gala for the Vance Foundation, Julian’s crown jewel and the primary vehicle for his carefully curated public persona. From the VIP mezzanine where Arthur and I stood away from the flashing cameras, the scene looked like a tableau from a high-society magazine. Julian stood near the center stage, flanked by city council members and local journalists, holding court with that effortless, charismatic smile that had shielded his darkest actions for years.

"He loves the applause almost as much as he loves the control," Arthur murmured, his eyes dark with quiet fury as he adjusted the cuffs of his dark overcoat. "Tonight, the illusion ends."

Down below, Marcus had slipped quietly through the side entrance, accompanied by two federal marshals and a senior inspector from the state attorney general's office. They moved with calculated precision, bypassing the reception desk and heading directly toward the private media room behind the stage where Julian stored his presentation laptops and financial records. My heart hammered against my ribs, a cold knot tightening in my stomach despite the warmth of the room and the soft murmur of string quartet music floating up from the floor.

Julian caught sight of the commotion near the side stage just as the main projection screens above him flickered. Instead of the polished promotional video highlighting the foundation's charitable works, the displays suddenly snapped into high-definition digital frames pulled directly from our encrypted thumb drive. The room fell into an abrupt, suffocating silence as the crystal-clear audio of Julian's voice filled the cavernous hall, exposing years of embezzlement, fraudulent grants, and cold, calculated cruelty behind closed doors.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Cameras flashed wildly, but this time they captured Julian’s face draining of all color, his polished smile fracturing into sheer panic as he spun around to face the screens. Security guards made no move to protect him; they simply stood back as the federal officers walked straight up to the stage, their badges gleaming under the blinding stage lights. I gripped the brass railing of the mezzanine, watching the man who had terrorized my home finally stripped of his armor before the entire city.

"It’s over," Arthur whispered, placing a steadying hand on my shoulder. "Let's go home."
