Chapter 2: Beneath the Linen

The hum of polite conversation around our corner table rose and fell like a distant tide. Waiters in black vests wove between tables carrying silver trays laden with petit fours and vintage port. I reached for my water glass, my fingers brushing the cold condensation on the crystal. My mind was half-stuck on a quarterly deficit report I had signed off on yesterday—numbers that didn't quite add up, expenses routed through shell accounts that bore Julian's private signature.

Then I felt a small, trembling tug at my sleeve.

I turned my head. Lily had leaned entirely across the narrow space between her chair and mine. Her small body was tense, vibrating with an urgent, nervous energy that contrasted sharply with the relaxed opulence of the room. She pressed her face close to my ear, her breath warm and smelling faintly of ginger ale.

"Daddy, look under the table!" she whispered, her voice cracking slightly on the last word.

I froze. The ambient noise of the ballroom seemed to recede into a muffled hum, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic thud of my own pulse in my temples. I didn't immediately move my head; instead, my eyes swept the faces around us. Julian was still smiling, nodding at something a distant board member was saying across the aisle, while his left hand—the hand that should have been resting on his own knee—had vanished from the tabletop entirely.

Slowly, deliberately, I let my cloth napkin slip from my lap. It fluttered downward, catching the edge of my chair leg before landing softly on the rich Persian rug beneath our feet.

I bent down to retrieve it, ducking my head below the heavy drape of the white damask tablecloth.

In the dim shadow cast by the table's center pedestal, the tableau was stark and undeniable. Julian's hand was clamped firmly over Elena's. Her fingers were interwoven with his, her thumb stroking the back of his knuckles with a quiet, practiced intimacy that belonged to years, not minutes. They weren't just sitting near each other; they were anchored together in a secret alliance, miles away from the glittering gala above.
