Chapter 9: The Heir's Portrait

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long, sharp shadows across the mahogany floor of my private study. On my desk sat the front-page spread of the city's leading financial daily. The headline screamed: TYCOON'S SECRET HEIR DISCOVERED: FOUNDATION EMBROILED IN SCANDAL. Beside it was a grainy photograph of Emma peering through the leaded glass of the third-floor window, her dark eyes wide and vulnerable against the backdrop of our family's grand estate.
The phone beside the laptop rang incessantly, its screen flashing with calls from board members, journalists, and corporate partners demanding statements. I ignored every single one of them.
The heavy oak door creaked open, and Emma slipped into the room, wearing her cream sweater and clutching the gold pocket watch necklace against her chest. Behind her stepped Clara, carrying a small plate of toast and fruit.
"Are those people outside going to take our house away, Lorenzo?" Emma asked softly, stopping a few feet from my desk. She pointed a small finger toward the French doors leading to the snowy terrace, where distant murmurs of reporters could faintly be heard beyond the gates.
I stood up, walking around the desk to kneel beside her, meeting her gaze at eye level just as I had on the first night. I took her small, cold hand in mine, feeling the heavy metal of the antique locket between our fingers.
"No one is taking anything from us, Emma," I said, my voice steady and deliberate. "Those people outside are just confused. They don't understand how a family is built. But we do, don't we?"
She nodded slowly, a tiny, hopeful smile touching the corners of her lips. "We have the watch."
"We have the watch," I confirmed, standing up and taking her by the hand. "And today, we’re going to show everyone that this house belongs to us."
I turned to Clara, who stood by the doorway with a quiet, knowing look in her eyes. "Call the estate's press office. Tell them I'm holding a private press conference in the foyer at noon. No corporate PR agents, no spin doctors. Just the truth."

Clara’s eyes widened slightly, a rare display of surprise breaking through her disciplined exterior. "Are you certain, Mr. Vance? The board will call for your complete resignation if you address the press directly."
"Let them," I replied, my gaze hardening. "The empire my father built on silence is finished. Today, I'm building a real legacy."
