Chapter 13: The Confrontation at Dusk

I didn't turn around immediately. I let the silence stretch across the sterile laboratory, the low hum of the climate-control units providing a steady, rhythmic backdrop to the tension in the room. Slowly, I turned my head to find Marcus Moretti standing in the doorway, his posture rigid, his impeccably tailored suit jacket unbuttoned, and his hands resting empty at his sides. He didn't look like a defeated man; he looked like a cornered animal calculating its final escape vector.
"You're supposed to be in federal custody under armed guard, Marcus," I said, my voice dangerously calm as I stepped away from the terminal.
"Federal custody is a temporary inconvenience when you have the right legal representation on retainer," Marcus replied, a thin, bitter smile touching the corners of his mouth. He took a slow step into the room, his eyes darting toward the open laptop on the desk. "You think you've won because Miller’s men locked down the main house. You think exposing the financial irregularities of the foundation makes you a hero."
"You used children as financial leverage and tested experimental toxins under my roof," I countered, closing the distance between us until the space heater on the desk hummed audibly between us. "That isn't an irregularity, Marcus. That's treason against everything this family name is supposed to stand for."
"Family name?" Marcus laughed softly, a dry, humorless sound that lacked any trace of warmth. "The Moretti name was built on ruthless pragmatism, Dominic. Not your modern, sentimental charity work. Our grandfather didn't build this empire by handing out scholarships; he built it by controlling the levers of power that others were too weak to touch."
"Times change, Marcus. And so do the men who hold the power," I said, my gaze fixed squarely on his eyes, searching for the familiar arrogance that had defined his entire corporate career. "Your network is dismantled. The Zurich accounts are frozen. Vance is talking to federal prosecutors as we speak."
Marcus’s expression hardened, the brittle veneer of composure cracking under the weight of the inevitable reality. "Vance is a coward. He’ll fold the moment they offer him a reduced sentence. But he doesn't know the half of it. The real architecture of this foundation goes far deeper than a few offshore shell companies."
Behind me, the heavy steel door of the laboratory clicked again, and the sharp sound of approaching footsteps echoed down the corridor. A moment later, Agent Miller stepped into the room, flanked by two tactical officers with their sidearms holstered but ready.
"We secured the perimeter access points," Miller announced, his eyes darting between Marcus and me before locking onto the open terminal. "The data-wipe protocol has been intercepted by our cyber unit. We have the complete financial ledger and the direct communications link to the Zurich syndicate."
Marcus slowly raised his hands, not in surrender, but with the calculated resignation of a man who knew the game was finally over. "Enjoy your victory, Dominic. But when the board wakes up tomorrow and realizes what it takes to keep an empire of this size afloat, they'll be begging for someone who knows how to handle the shadow work."

"The shadow work ends tonight," I said, nodding to Agent Miller as the federal officers stepped forward to secure Marcus in handcuffs.
As they led him out through the sterile hallway, I lingered for a moment by the terminal, watching the final lines of encrypted data scroll across the screen before fading to black. The estate was safe, the conspiracy was exposed, and the dark chapter of the Moretti name was finally closed.
