Chapter 13: The Foundation Gala

The grand ballroom of the Grandview Hotel glittered under thousands of crystal chandelier lights, reflecting the blinding camera flashes of local and national press. Outside, luxury sedans lined the curb as elite socialites, politicians, and foundation board members stepped onto the crimson carpet in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos. It was the epitome of public glamour—a self-congratulatory celebration of wealth, influence, and untouchable reputation.

Inside the VIP holding suite, Evelyn adjusted the collar of her silver-trimmed evening jacket, her silver hair impeccably styled, her expression cold and composed as she reviewed her acceptance speech. Marcus stood near the door, checking his wristwatch with an air of practiced arrogance.

"Everything is in order for the presentation," Marcus said, looking down at Evelyn. "The media packets are distributed, and the board has approved your opening remarks regarding the estate's philanthropic legacy."

Elevance glanced at her reflection in the gilded mirror, a faint, satisfied smile touching her lips. "Good. Once this award is locked in, our family's public standing will be bulletproof for another decade. No one dares question the foundation's integrity when the cameras are rolling."

What Evelyn didn't know was that across the city, David Vance had already uploaded the comprehensive digital dossier to three major news syndicates, complete with Clara's sworn video deposition and the scanned financial records of twenty years of illegal confinement. And at that exact moment, my sedan was turning into the hotel’s subterranean parking garage.

I sat in the driver's seat for a brief moment, taking a slow, steady breath. In the backseat, Clara sat composed and dignified, dressed in a tailored navy blazer, with a quiet strength radiating from her posture. Chloe sat beside her, holding her brown teddy bear in one hand and my hand in the other. We weren't sneaking in through the service corridors this time; we were walking through the front entrance, straight into the heart of Evelyn's glittering empire.

As the elevator doors chimed and opened onto the mezzanine level overlooking the grand ballroom, the murmur of hundreds of guests rose like a low tide. We walked down the wide marble staircase together—Clara in her wheelchair, myself pushing her gently, and Chloe walking beside us in her pink lace dress, clutching her bear. Heads began to turn. Whispers rippled through the front rows as prominent society figures recognized the faces they thought were buried deep in the past.
