Chapter 11: Dawn Interrogation

The early morning light did little to warm the grand foyer of the Vance mansion. Instead, the pale gray beams cutting through the towering arched windows highlighted the dust motes dancing in the cold air, turning the once-gilded entrance into something resembling a sterile museum exhibit. I stood near the base of the sweeping marble staircase, my light purple maid's uniform feeling like heavy armor I no longer wanted to wear. My duffel bag sat on the floor beside my boots, packed and ready for the moment I could finally walk away from this gilded cage.
Officer Maya Hayes stood by the double doors, her dark police uniform sharp and professional against the opulent backdrop. Across from her stood Julian Vance, his posture rigid, his dark hair slightly disheveled despite his best efforts to maintain his usual immaculate appearance. His light blue button-down shirt was missing its cufflinks, a subtle sign that his morning routine had been violently interrupted.
"I want to know under what authority you're questioning my household staff without my personal legal counsel present," Julian said, his voice dropping into that smooth, controlled baritone he usually reserved for boardrooms. He was trying to project absolute authority, but his eyes betrayed a frantic darting movement—constantly checking the perimeter, checking the doors, checking Officer Hayes's expression.
"Mr. Vance, this is a formal criminal investigation into the tampering of a child safety device and suspected corporate document tampering," Officer Hayes replied, her tone level and unyielding. She didn't flinch under his gaze. "We've executed a search warrant for the local servers, and based on the encrypted logs provided to my department this morning, we have probable cause to question everyone under this roof—starting with the individuals who had direct access to the digital controls."
Julian let out a sharp, dismissive laugh, stepping forward. "That digital log is a fabrication. It's common knowledge that disgruntled domestic staff will go to any length to smear an employer when their contracts are up for review. Elena here has been looking for an excuse to cause trouble since the day she arrived."
Before I could step forward to answer the baseless accusation, a soft footfall echoed from the landing above. We all turned to look. Clara Vance stood at the edge of the stairs, wearing her royal blue satin wrap dress. Her blonde hair was loose, falling softly around her shoulders, and for the first time in years, she wasn't hiding behind a mask of high-society composure. Her face was pale, but her chin was held high.
"He's lying, Officer Hayes," Clara said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent foyer.
Julian whipped his head around, his face flushing a dark, dangerous crimson. "Clara. Go back upstairs. You're overwrought. You don't know what you're saying."
"No, Julian. For ten years, I've gone upstairs when you told me to," Clara said, descending the steps slowly, her hand resting lightly on the polished wooden banister. She reached the marble floor and walked directly past her husband, coming to a stop just a few feet from Officer Hayes and me. "I stayed silent while you manipulated our finances, while you treated our home like a corporate asset, and while you endangered our baby's life just to cover up your embezzlement tracks."
Julian took a step toward her, his hand clenched into a tight fist at his side. "Clara, you are destroying this family. Do you hear yourself? You're siding with the help against your own husband?"
"The help showed more courage today than you ever have, Julian," Clara replied coldly, her voice devoid of fear. She turned to Officer Hayes, opening a small leather folio she had clutched in her hand. "Here are the physical banking statements and offshore account passwords Julian forced me to sign under duress. The digital logs aren't fabricated. I watched him override the nursery's smart-system parameters from his tablet last week."
The silence in the foyer grew so heavy it felt suffocating. Julian stared at his wife, his expression shifting from furious blustering to genuine, frozen horror. He realized in that instant that his entire world—the wealth, the prestige, the carefully constructed illusion of perfection—was crumbling not because of an outside attack, but because the foundation had finally refused to hold his weight.

Officer Hayes stepped forward, pulling a pair of standard-issue steel cuffs from her belt. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for reckless endangerment, obstruction of justice, and financial fraud. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Julian looked around the room as if searching for a hidden escape hatch, but there was none. The marble floors, the grand chandeliers, the luxury furniture—all of it felt like a collapsing set on a stage. With stiff, mechanical movements, he finally turned around, the sharp click of the handcuffs echoing off the high ceiling like a gavel coming down hard and final.
