Chapter 13: Clearing the Estate

By mid-afternoon, the Vance estate had returned to a strange, quiet order. The flashing blue lights of the federal vehicles had long since vanished down the winding private drive, leaving behind only the rustling palm trees and the distant hum of city traffic. In the grand nursery, the sunlight streamed through the arched windows, casting warm golden patterns across the Persian rug where the medical monitor now hummed with a steady, rhythmic green pulse. Infant Leo lay asleep in his crib, wrapped tightly in his blue blanket, breathing with the easy, deep cadence of complete health.

I stood by the window, looking out over the manicured lawns where private security guards patrolled the perimeter with a new, rigorous discipline. The house felt lighter, stripped of the suffocating paranoia that had hung in the hallways like fog for months. The staff had been vetted anew, and the compromised elements planted by Arthur’s network had been quietly escorted off the grounds.

Julian walked into the nursery carrying two mugs of black coffee, stopping just short of the crib. He looked tired, the intense worry lines around his eyes finally softening into something resembling peace. He held one mug out toward me, the steam rising in a thin, fragile column between us.

“You take it black,” he observed quietly, a faint ghost of a smile touching his lips.

I took the mug from his hand, our fingers brushing briefly against the warm ceramic. “You learned that from the personnel file, or did you check the kitchen logs yourself?”

“Let’s call it executive privilege,” Julian said, leaning back against the mahogany changing table and taking a slow sip. He looked down at his white dress shirt—clean today, no blood, no formula stains—then back at me. “The board held an emergency vote an hour ago. Sterling's shares have been frozen pending forfeiture, and the restructuring plan has been permanently scrapped.”

“And the nursery security?” I asked, taking a measured sip of the coffee.

“Completely overhauled under your direct supervision,” Julian replied, his voice steady and absolute. “Nobody enters this wing without your clearance. Not even me.”

I let out a small, genuine breath, the last remnants of the tension leaving my shoulders. “Good. Because I’m very strict about visiting hours.”

Julian let out a low, easy laugh, looking over at his son sleeping peacefully in the crib. The heavy armor of the billionaire tech mogul was gone, replaced by the simple, grounded presence of a father who finally had his world back in balance.
