Chapter 9: Panic in the Boardroom

The thirteenth-floor boardroom at Vanguard Capital was designed to project absolute, unshakeable permanence. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels looked out over the glittering financial district, and the mahogany conference table gleamed under soft recessed lighting. Yet today, the room felt less like a sanctuary of capitalism and more like a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding. Jonathan stood at the head of the table, his tie loosened, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat as three major institutional investors loomed over him with folded arms and icy expressions.

"Explain to us, Jonathan, why our quarterly liquidity draw has been blocked by federal compliance," demanded Robert Sterling, managing director of Horizon Pension Fund, his voice echoing sharply off the glass. "We’ve got eighty million dollars sitting in an escrow account that your executive team claims is untouchable. If this isn't resolved by noon, we're pulling our entire portfolio out of Vanguard."

Jonathan forced a tight, brittle smile, gripping the edges of the mahogany table so hard his knuckles turned white. "It’s a temporary administrative glitch, Robert," he lied, his voice pitching slightly higher than normal. "Our legal department is ironing out a minor compliance oversight with federal regulators. There is zero risk to your capital. You have my absolute personal guarantee."

"Your personal guarantee isn't worth the paper it's printed on right now," snapped a female board member, throwing a printed financial news alert onto the desk. The headline flashing across her tablet screen was brutal: Vanguard Capital Under Federal Investigation for Alleged Asset Laundering and Offshore Evasion.

Jonathan’s stomach plummeted. He hadn't seen that alert yet. Before he could formulate a response, his mobile phone buzzed violently on the table. He glanced down at the screen, and his breath caught in his throat. It was a direct notification from his private wealth manager stating that his personal credit lines had been frozen indefinitely pending an emergency court order. The walls were closing in, and for the first time in his life, Jonathan realized that his wealth, his status, and his corporate armor couldn't protect him from the relentless momentum of the truth. He looked around the boardroom, seeing only trapped rats calculating their own survival, and he knew the empire was crumbling from within.
