Chapter 1: The Poolside Accusation

The water of the infinity pool looked like a pool of black ink under the recessed blue lighting, shivering slightly from the night breeze. My knees pressed hard against the cold, damp stone patio, the fabric of my maid uniform clinging to my skin in a heavy, freezing second skin. My dark brown hair was plastered to my forehead, water dripping from the ends and stinging my eyes, which burned with a mixture of chlorinated water and hot, sudden terror. Only seconds ago, I had plunged fully clothed into the deep end after hearing a heavy splash and seeing a white bundle sink beneath the surface. I had dragged the infant out, coughing and gasping, my lungs burning, only to find myself surrounded by the shouting glare of the estate’s owners.
Victoria stood right above me, her blonde wavy hair catching the harsh amber glow of the patio sconces. Her maroon sleeveless evening dress shimmered like dried blood against the manicured lawn, and her face was twisted into an ugly, triumphant mask of rage. She pointed a manicured finger straight at my face, her voice cutting through the damp night air with terrifying sharpness. “She pushed him in! I saw her do it!” she screamed, her chest heaving as if she were the one fighting for breath. Her accusation hung in the humid Westchester air, heavy and absolute, transforming my frantic rescue into something monstrous.
Beside her, Arthur stood rigid, his short dark hair ruffled by the wind, dressed in a simple grey collared shirt that looked out of place beside Victoria's gala attire. In his arms, he held the newborn infant wrapped tightly in the white blanket I had just used to dry the baby's face. Arthur’s expression was a shattered puzzle of shock and confusion; his eyes darted from Victoria's accusing finger down to my shivering, kneeling form. He looked down at the tiny bundle against his chest as if he were only just realizing the child was real, his breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches.

I looked up at him, my lips trembling so hard I could barely form the syllables, my hands still slick with pool water. “I jumped in to save him! I pulled him out!” I cried out, my voice cracking with a desperation that felt entirely invisible against Victoria's theatrical fury. I reached out a trembling hand toward the baby, desperate to prove I meant no harm, but Victoria stepped in front of Arthur, her heels clicking aggressively on the stone.
“Look at her, she’s lying to save herself!” Victoria shouted down at me, her voice rising in pitch, weaponizing my soaked uniform and my breathless state as instant proof of guilt. She turned her glare onto Arthur, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. “Are you just going to stand there? She tried to drown your son, Arthur! Look at him!” Arthur clutched the crying baby tighter to his chest, his large frame trembling as he looked back and forth between my weeping face and Victoria's furious stance, the heavy tension on the patio suffocating every breath. “What is going on here?” he whispered, his voice cracking under the unbearable weight of the moment.
