Chapter 6: The Safehouse Dawn

The morning sun filtered through the cheap venetian blinds of the safehouse, casting thin, dusty stripes across the worn linoleum floor. I sat at the small laminate kitchen table, a cold cup of black coffee in my hand, staring at the legal files Marcus had compiled overnight. Chloe was still asleep in the adjoining bedroom, her breathing steady and quiet for the first time in months. The contrast between this Spartan apartment and the sprawling glass penthouse was staggering, yet here, wrapped in a blanket on a faded sofa, my daughter was finally safe from the polished terror of her mother’s world.
Marcus walked out of the back room, pulling a gray sweatshirt over his broad shoulders. He tossed a fresh flash drive onto the table, the plastic casing clacking against the wood. "We cracked the second drive from the penthouse server," he said, his voice low so as not to wake the child. "It's worse than we thought, Arthur. Michael Cole wasn't just visiting. He had administrative privileges over the smart-home automation system. He could lock down the nursery remotely whenever he pleased."
My stomach tightened into a hard, cold knot. The realization that another man had held digital dominion over my daughter's room made my hands shake. I set the coffee mug down carefully, refusing to let the rage spill over into reckless action. "How deep does his financial entanglement with Vance Architecture go?" I asked, looking up at Marcus with a steady gaze.
"Deeper than your board meetings," Marcus replied, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite me. "He's been quietly buying up distressed shares through shell companies for eighteen months. Victoria wasn't just having an affair; she was acting as his proxy to orchestrate a hostile takeover of your firm while bleeding your personal accounts dry."

The pieces clicked together with brutal clarity. Every late-night board dinner, every gala where Victoria insisted I mingle with investors while she slipped away to the private suites upstairs—it was all part of a coordinated campaign to isolate me professionally and destroy me personally. I picked up the flash drive, feeling its insignificant weight. This small piece of plastic was the lever that would dismantle their entire empire.
"We need to move faster," I said, standing up and pushing the chair back. "If Victoria realizes we have the server logs, she and Cole will liquidate the offshore accounts before the court freezes them." Marcus nodded, grabbing his jacket from the back of the chair. "I'll handle the financial trail," he said grimly. "You focus on getting Chloe ready for the court-appointed psychologist this afternoon."
