Chapter 9: The Grand Entrance

The rain had cleared by Friday evening, leaving the Sterling estate gleaming under a canopy of crisp spring stars. Valet parkers scrambled across the gravel drive as luxury sedans and vintage sports cars deposited the elite of the city at the grand entrance. Inside, the ballroom was a masterpiece of opulence—crystal chandeliers caught the light of a thousand candles, and the polished marble floors reflected the sparkling gowns and tailored tuxedos of the invited guests.

I stood near the tall arched windows, adjusting my dark grey tie and scanning the room. My black trench coat was hung in the cloakroom, but the tailored black suit and the tattoos on my hands were unmistakable as I moved through the crowd. Clara, dressed in a simple, elegant emerald-green gown that I had arranged to be delivered earlier that afternoon, stood quietly a few paces away near the musicians' alcove, her head held high. The faint bruising on her cheek was skillfully covered, but the quiet dignity in her posture spoke volumes.

At the center of the room, holding court near the grand staircase, stood Victoria. She wore a striking crimson evening gown with a plunging neckline, the family diamond necklace catching the light with every breath she took. She was laughing smoothly at a joke made by the city's chief magistrate, playing the gracious hostess to perfection.

"She's about to give her opening remarks," Marcus murmured, stepping up beside me with a glass of sparkling water in his hand. He was dressed in a clean, dark suit, unrecognizable from the frightened groundskeeper in the North Gate cottage. "The security detail around the conservatory vault has been thinned out because all the guards are stationed near the front doors for the press pool."

"Good," I replied, my eyes fixed on Victoria as she stepped gracefully toward the raised dais at the front of the ballroom. A hush fell over the room as the string quartet faded out.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed friends," Victoria's voice rang out, clear, resonant, and dripping with practiced warmth. "Thank you all for gathering tonight to support our foundation. For generations, the Sterling family has stood as a pillar of integrity, community, and unwavering dedication to our city's future..."

The hypocrisy of her words hung heavily in the air. Around me, guests nodded and smiled, completely unaware of the stolen land, the silenced staff, and the ledger resting securely in the underground vault just fifty yards away.

"Now," Victoria continued, smiling radiantly as she gestured toward the double doors leading to the conservatory. "Before we open the dance floor, I invite our distinguished guests to witness our traditional endowment presentation in the private archive."

This was the moment. I caught Clara's eye across the room; she gave a single, imperceptible nod. The trap was sprung.
