Chapter 9: The Parking Garage

The subterranean parking garage beneath Marcus’s office building smelled of stale exhaust and damp concrete, a stark contrast to the glittering chandeliers of the charity gala. Evelyn’s heels echoed sharply against the floor as she walked toward her town car, her breath forming small white clouds in the chilly air. She had expected to find her driver waiting by the open door, but the vehicle was empty, parked half a block deeper into the shadows than usual. A solitary figure leaned against a concrete pillar nearby, arms crossed over a dark wool coat. It was Marcus, his face half-shadowed by the harsh fluorescent lights overhead. Evelyn stopped three yards away, her posture instantly stiffening into defensive pride. She adjusted the collar of her royal blue dress, forcing a cold, dismissive smile onto her lips. She had spent a lifetime intimidating subordinates and rivals, and she refused to let a court-appointed investigator rattle her nerves in a concrete box.

"Working late, Mr. Vance?" Evelyn asked, her voice carrying a sharp, ringing edge that bounced off the concrete walls. "Or are you simply moonlighting as a parking attendant now?" Marcus didn't smile. He pushed off the pillar and walked slowly toward her, his expression entirely unreadable. In his left hand, a small digital voice recorder gleamed faintly under the flickering light, identical in shape to the one I had carried into the courtroom days earlier. Evelyn’s eyes flicked to the device, and for a fraction of a second, the color drained entirely from her face. She recovered quickly, narrowing her eyes with calculated fury. "If you think intimidation tactics will alter the grand jury's timeline, you are gravely mistaken. My lawyers will have this whole farce dismissed by morning." Marcus stopped just out of arm's reach, his voice low and steady. "I'm not here to intimidate you, Evelyn. I'm here to offer you a chance to stop digging. The financial records from your offshore accounts arrived from Zurich this afternoon. Every forged signature, every silenced witness, every diverted charity fund—it's all accounted for."

Evelyn stepped closer, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper as she abandoned all pretense of polite society. "Listen to me very carefully, Marcus. You have no idea who you are dealing with. If you hand those files to the district attorney, I will ruin you. I will strip your practice, your license, and your reputation until nothing is left. Walk away now, and name your price." As the words left her mouth, Marcus pressed a small button on his coat lapel, and the red recording indicator light blinked steadily in the dim air. He had captured every syllable of her threat, turning her attempted bribe and intimidation into a fresh criminal indictment for obstruction of justice. Evelyn stared at the blinking red light, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that she had just walked directly into a trap of her own making. She turned sharply on her heel, her breath catching in her throat, and climbed into her town car, slamming the heavy door behind her as the driver pulled away into the dark street.
