Chapter 6: The Forensic Audit

The boardroom air was thick with the scent of roasted coffee and suppressed tension. Every pair of eyes around the massive mahogany table fixed on me as I walked down the center aisle and took my place at the head of the table—the seat Julian had occupied with such arrogance just twenty-four hours earlier. Arthur Sterling seated himself to my immediate right, while his bodyguards stationed themselves silently by the double doors.
Julian stumbled into the room a moment later, looking like a man who had just survived a high-speed collision. He didn't take a seat; instead, he gripped the back of an empty chair near the middle of the table, his knuckles turning white. Chloe remained standing near the doorway, her manicured fingers digging into the leather of her portfolio.
“This meeting is entirely out of order!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the gray financial district. He looked around the table at the independent directors, many of whom looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. “Arthur, you have no jurisdiction to call an emergency quorum without sixty days' written notice! This is a hostile coup, and I will have my corporate counsel file an immediate injunction!”
“Sit down, Julian,” Arthur said calmly, not even bothering to look up as he slid a thick, bound black dossier across the polished wood toward the center of the table. “Your corporate counsel isn't answering their phones this morning, and your IT director is currently downstairs explaining to federal investigators why your primary server was attempting a remote data wipe at 4:00 AM.”
Julian flinched as if he had been struck physically. He slowly pulled out the chair and sat down, his breathing shallow and erratic.
“Let’s direct our attention to Exhibit A,” I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room with absolute clarity. I tapped a remote on the table, and the massive projector screen behind me flickered to life, illuminating the room in a bright, cold white glow.
The screen displayed a complex financial flowchart titled Project Meridian: Asset Diversion & Shell Company Routing. Glowing red lines connected Vance Global R&D accounts to an offshore entity registered in the British Virgin Islands under the name Apex Holdings LLC—an entity whose sole corporate officer was listed as Chloe Blake.
A collective murmur rippled through the board members. Several directors leaned forward, adjusting their glasses to read the transaction amounts displayed on the spreadsheet. Millions of dollars in patent licensing fees, systematically funneled away from the company’s primary revenue streams over the past eighteen months.
“This... this is complete fabrication!” Julian stammered, standing up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the floor. He pointed a shaking finger at the screen, his face flushing a deep, mottled red. “Eleanor had access to the legacy accounting servers before she left! She’s doctored these records to frame me and Ms. Blake! You can't trust a word of this—she's a vindictive, scorned ex-wife trying to steal the company out from under me!”
“Sit down, Julian,” I repeated, my tone dropping an octave, carrying a weight that brooked no argument.
I clicked the remote again. The screen shifted from financial spreadsheets to high-resolution color PDF copies of wire transfer authorizations bearing Julian’s exact digital signature, timestamped at 2:00 AM on various weekends when the office was completely empty. Beneath each signature was the digital metadata proving the IP address originated from the private router installed inside the minimalist mansion—the very same house where Julian had just tried to evict me.
“The metadata doesn't lie, Julian,” I said quietly, leaning forward and resting my forearms on the table. “Neither does the forensic audit conducted by Sterling Capital over the last forty-eight hours. You didn't just embezzle from Vance Global; you used corporate funds to finance Chloe’s lifestyle while hollowing out our core development budget. You left the company exposed to total insolvency just to pad your own ego.”
Chloe finally broke her silence, her voice shrill and panicked as she stepped further into the room. “Julian, tell them! Tell them she's lying! You said she couldn't touch us! You said the board was in your pocket!”

The entire room went dead silent.
Julian slowly turned his head to look at Chloe, his expression shifting from blind panic to a cold, venomous realization. The illusion of their partnership shattered in a single fraction of a second, exposing the raw, ugly truth of what they were to one another.
