Chapter 10: Courthouse Steps

The autumn air outside the Foley Square courthouse bit straight through my wool coat, but the chill on my skin was nothing compared to the electric tension vibrating through the crowd of reporters and camera operators. Flashbulbs popped like white-hot lightning against the granite steps as Roman stepped out of the black sedan, his tall frame cutting through the chaos with absolute, unyielding authority. In his hand, he carried a heavy leather briefcase containing the forensic audit, the seized bank ledgers, and Elena’s handwritten diary—the complete, irrefutable blueprint of fifty years of financial manipulation and institutional cruelty.

I stayed a half-step behind him, my hand resting protectively over Lily’s small shoulder as a plainclothes federal marshal escorted us through the media crush. Lily buried her face against my jacket, overwhelmed by the shouting reporters and the blinding lights. I pulled my olive-green jacket tighter around her, murmuring soft, reassuring words against her tangled brown hair. Roman didn’t break stride, nor did he offer a single sound bite to the microphones shoved into his face. His dark eyes remained fixed on the double doors of the federal courthouse, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line.

Inside the limestone-columned lobby, the noise of the street vanished, replaced by the hushed echoes of solemn institutional authority. We cleared security without delay, guided by a senior clerk who led us down a secure corridor toward Judge Vance’s chambers. Every step felt heavy with consequence, the culmination of weeks spent unearthing secrets that Helena D’Angelo had spent a lifetime burying beneath charitable contributions and high-society philanthropy.

“Mr. D’Angelo,” a crisp, professional voice greeted us as we entered the antechamber. It was Marcus Vance, our lead counsel, his graying temples and sharp silver-rimmed glasses projecting calm competence. He glanced briefly at me, then down at Lily before looking back at Roman. “The emergency injunction filed by Helena’s counsel has been officially denied. Judge Vance is prepared to hear our motion for immediate asset freeze and criminal referral based on the federal wire fraud evidence.”

“Let’s finish it,” Roman said quietly, his voice carrying the deep resonance of a man who had already endured the worst and was now entirely focused on the cleanup.

We entered the inner chambers. The room was warm, dominated by a large mahogany conference table and shelves lined with leather-bound legal digests. Magistrate Judge Howard sat at the head of the table, his expression weary but attentive as he adjusted his glasses. Across the room, sitting alone at the defense counsel table, was a junior associate from Helena’s firm—a pale, sweating young man who looked entirely out of his depth without the matriarch breathing down his neck. Helena herself was absent, still barricaded in her Fifth Avenue penthouse, operating under the delusional belief that a D’Angelo could simply ignore a federal subpoena.

“Counsel,” Judge Howard said, folding his hands over a stack of documents. “I’ve reviewed the preliminary filings regarding the D’Angelo Foundation embezzlement and the fraudulent concealment of a minor. Mr. Vance, you may present your core exhibits.”

For the next two hours, Marcus laid out the evidence with surgical precision. He displayed the monthly wire transfers—fifty thousand dollars routed from corporate accounts into offshore shells controlled by Arthur Vance, funds meant for Lily’s upbringing that were instead siphoned to maintain Helena's lavish social empire. Then came the forensic accountant's breakdown, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the diversion was systematic, calculated, and entirely directed by Helena. Finally, Marcus placed Elena D’Angelo’s journal and the certified birth and adoption records on the table, proving the deliberate deception that had torn Roman's life apart decades ago.

The opposing associate muttered a feeble objection about jurisdictional overreach, but Judge Howard barely looked up before dismissing it with a flick of his pen.

“The court finds probable cause for systemic financial fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy,” Judge Howard announced, his gavel striking the wood with a sharp, definitive crack that echoed through the quiet room. “All personal accounts, real estate holdings, and corporate trust funds under Helena D’Angelo’s direct control are hereby frozen, effective immediately. Federal marshals are authorized to secure the Fifth Avenue penthouse and execute search warrants for all physical and digital records.”

I let out a slow, trembling breath I felt like I’d been holding since the night of the gala. Roman reached out, his warm fingers wrapping firmly around my hand beneath the table, giving it a single, reassuring squeeze. The public illusion of the D'Angelo dynasty was officially shattered, and there was no turning back.
