Chapter 10: Infiltrating the Gala

The grand ballroom of the Metro Convention Center was a blinding spectacle of wealth, polished crystal chandeliers, and expensive champagne. Hundreds of state dignitaries, corporate donors, and foundation board members mingled under the warm glow of recessed lighting, laughing easily in custom tuxedos and designer evening gowns. At the center of the dais, Arthur Sterling stood addressing the crowd, his silver hair catching the stage lights as he spoke smoothly about educational philanthropy and meritocracy.

Outside the main double doors, standing behind a service corridor checkpoint, I adjusted the lapel of my borrowed black press blazer and slipped my counterfeit media badge into place. Beside me stood Marcus Vance, holding a sleek digital transmission device wired directly into an encrypted cloud server.

"Remember," Marcus whispered, checking his wristwatch. "Once we bypass the AV control booth backstage, we have exactly three minutes before the automated security scripts lock out the main public address system."

I nodded, my breath steady, my focus absolute. We didn't come here to protest from the sidewalk. We came to pull back the curtain right in front of the entire elite class that kept the machine running.

We slipped past a distracted catering attendant and ducked into the dimly lit backstage area. Stacks of lighting crates and audio cables lined the concrete walls. Through the heavy black velvet curtains separating backstage from the auditorium, I could hear Arthur Sterling wrapping up his keynote speech to enthusiastic applause.

"And so," Sterling's amplified voice boomed across the ballroom speakers, "the Sterling Foundation remains steadfastly committed to absolute fairness, uncompromising integrity, and honoring the brightest young minds in our state..."

Marcus reached the main audio mixing console, his fingers flying across the digital sliders with practiced speed. He plugged a specialized decryption drive into the master auxiliary port, immediately overriding the wireless microphone feed and connecting the house sound system directly to our master database of internal foundation memos, scoring sheets, and the unedited audio confession of the lead judge from Exhibit 47.

"Ready?" Marcus asked, his finger hovering over the broadcast execute key.

I took one final, grounding breath, stepping up to the edge of the velvet curtain where I could see the sea of tuxedoed backs in the ballroom. "Hit play," I said softly.

Marcus slammed his palm down onto the key.

Instantly, Arthur Sterling's voice on the stage microphone cut out with a sharp static pop. Across the massive overhead PA system, filling the glittering ballroom with absolute, deafening clarity, the raw, unedited audio recording of the lead judge began to play: “We were instructed from the top down. Sterling’s sponsor relative had to win first place. Kayla Harris’s score was altered, and she was told to throw her trophy away.”

The applause in the ballroom died instantly, replaced by a stunned, suffocating silence. On stage, Arthur Sterling froze mid-gesture, his face draining of all color as he stared out into the paralyzed crowd. The public glamour had finally collided with the private hidden truth, and there was nowhere left to hide.
